Conference highlights (not the hot dogs)
For many, NEXPO is just a trade show -- aisles and aisles of attractive equipment and software, not to mention expensive hot dogs and high-quality ice cream products.
For others, there is also the conference. Here are a few of the sessions that we think might resemble interesting:
On Friday, June 20, a morning session on telecommunications technology and an afternoon session on new media technology promise to talk, respectively, about call-center management and web publishing tools.
Sunday, June 22, 10 a.m. to noon, @NEXPO.net will also deal with new media issues. Speakers include Peter Winter from Cox Interactive of Atlanta, Richard Peterson from the San Diego Union-Tribune, Kurt Dressel from Gannett Media Technologies International of Cincinnati and Matt Cohen from New Century Network of New York.
Monday's general session, June 23, from 9 to 10:15 a.m., will include presentations from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab, with speakers Joseph Jacobsen, Robert Gutman and Glorianna Davenport, all MIT professors.
Also on Monday, from 10:30 to noon, quality issues will be discussed. Speakers include Beverly McCombs from Dillard's Department Store Inc. of Fort Worth, Texas; Paul Lynch from the Chicago Tribune; Ed Lehr from the St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer Press; Kenneth Goodson from the Dallas Morning News, and Bob Crandall and George Remain, both from the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel.
At the same time, a session on data warehousing will be offered. Gerald Palmer from Thomson Technology Consulting Group of Boston, Lorie Schrader from the Dallas Morning News, Don Stroud from the Plain Dealer of Cleveland, Steven Hannah from the Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Gazette and consultant David Lightfoot will speak.
On Tuesday, June 24, from 8:30 to 10 a.m., a session will address the issues of digital versus conventional delivery of display advertising. Speakers include Kara Gabbert of the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times, Gary Cosimini of Adobe Systems Inc. of New York, Monica Hubert of the Boston Globe and Ellen Snodgrass-Lind of the Greenville (S.C.) News. (Modesty forbids naming the moderator of this session.)
