Wide, wonderful world of workshops
Though the emphasis is always on the trade show, the Newspaper Association of America traditionally puts on a good NEXPO conference as well. This year, a variety of sessions will have topics of interest to pre-press, new-media and business executives:
A pre-Nexpo "bonus workshop," "What Color Is Your Rainbow? Finding the Keys to Color Quality," will be held Friday, June 15, from 2-5 p.m. Speakers will include Dennis Cheeseman of US Ink (a division of Sun Chemical), Kelly Cline of Cleveland's Plain Dealer, Ann Hirst of the Wall Street Journal, Rosemarie Monaco of Group M Inc., Russ Leseberg of Avail Technologies, Chuck Mathews of Ohio's Springfield News-Sun, and Toby Massey of the Associated Press; the session will be moderated by the editor and publisher of this very journal.
A global view of newspaper technology will be explored in "Around the World in 90 Minutes," Saturday, June 16, from 8:30-10 a.m. Speakers will include Frank Kelett of the Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers Association (Panpa), Manfred Werfel of IFRA and Hitoshi Saito of the Japan Newspaper Publishers & Editors Association; the session will be moderated by Mark Mikolajczyk of Gannett Co. Inc.
Also Saturday from 8:30-10 a.m., "Going Wireless -- What You Need to Know," will highlight newspaper wireless success stories as well as explain the NAA wireless project. Speakers include Michael Pazzani of AdaptiveInfo and Melinda Gipson of the NAA.
The industry's dilemma of cross-media publishing will be discussed at "Oh What a Tangled Web We Weave: Print/Web Integration," on Sunday, June 17, from 8:30-10 a.m. Speakers will include Helen Cochran of Toronto's Globe Interactive, Rocky Rosen of The Herald-Sun, Durham, N.C., Mark Rousseau of Toronto's Torstar Media Group and Bernie Szachara of Gannett Co. Inc.; the session will be moderated by Peter Zollman of Advanced Interactive Media Group LLC.
Focusing on operational advantages, "Real World Benefits From Web Technology," will be held Tuesday, June 19, from 8:30-10 a.m. Speakers will include Tamara Goetzke of the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group, Diane Ludington of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Robert Murphy of the Boston Globe; the moderator will be Edward Baer, also of the Journal-Constitution.
