The Cole PapersJune 2000

Sessions aimed at you and me

With so many conferences running concurrently with NEXPO 2000 -- the Newspaper Association of America calls the whole shebang Newspapers 2000 -- marquee speakers like Colin Powell and marketing guru Sergio Lyman will get the spotlight.

But in the corners, there will be some sessions specifically aimed at technology:

  • On Friday, June 16, a "bonus" session is scheduled at 1:30 p.m., called "Capitalize on Handheld Technology," wherein the uses of PDAs will be discussed. Speakers include Gary Brockman of Georgia's Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Dan Glessner of Palm Inc., James Hueser of IBM and Vincent Luciano of Symbol Technologies Inc. The moderator will be Edward Baer, of the Journal-Constitution.

  • Monday, June 19, from 8-9 a.m., database marketing will be the topic: why you should care and how you can grow revenue in both your circulation and retail advertising departments with successful strategies. Speakers include Donald Poepping of Minneapolis' Star Tribune, Tom Ratkovich of Astech InterMedia and Dory Trinka of the Miami Herald ; the moderator is Richard Medeiros Jr. of Connecticut's Hartford Courant.

  • At 9:15 a.m. on Monday, the "hot topic" will be "E-Primer: Preparing for the Future." Session organizers ask the questions: How do you interface with the Web? What part does outsourcing play in the big picture? Speakers will include Linda Gagnon of Edgil Associates Inc., Stephen Fuschetti of InfiNet and William Yeack of Exodus Communications Inc.; the moderator will be Elizabeth Sholar of Thomson Newspapers.

  • "Electronic Advertising: From Copy to Print," will be the topic first thing Tuesday, June 20, 8-9 a.m. The session will explore techniques for improving output accuracy, workflow and customer service in a digital environment. Speakers will include Karyn Hawthorne of the Los Angeles Times, Debbie McNerney of Daytona Beach, Fla.'s News-Journal and Alvin Walker of Wilmington, Del.'s News-Journal; modesty forbids naming the moderator.

  • Also on Tuesday, from 9:15-10:15 a.m., will be "Navigating the Challenges of Color Management Software," which organizers say will allow you to "discover what works and what doesn't." Speakers include Annette Giaco of Gannett Co. Inc., Petter Lundberg of Teknik Media AB, Malm, Sweden and Richard Pandelo of The Record of Hackensack, N.J. The session will be moderated by Russ Leseberg of Avail Technologies.
