This year the Newspaper Association of America has determined that size does matter: It has bundled four of its constituency meetings together in mid-June in Orlando.
In addition to NEXPO, the technology conference and trade show, the NAA is also sponsoring the Co-Op and Sales Conference June 18-20; Connections, the new media conference, June 18-21, and the Marketing Conference, June 21-24.
Highlights of these four meetings -- collectively called Discovery '98 -- include:
Year 2000: An all-day Friday "bonus" session on the problems of computers handling the new century will include an "idea exchange" from 9 a.m. until noon, followed by a moderated session from 1:30 until 4:30. Speakers in the afternoon will include Peter de Jager, a Year 2000 expert; Kurt Duffy of Data Dimensions Inc. of Seattle; Carol Howard of The Oregonian in Portland; John Pourtless of the Orlando Sentinel, and Mike Schoepke of the Daily Herald in Arlington Heights, Ill.
Pagination and beyond: A look at electronic ad transmission, Saturday, 8:30-10 a.m., with speakers including Jim Gerberich of The Associated Press; Bob Gibson of the Billings (Mont.) Gazette; Mechealle Hanks of the Lexington (Ky.) Herald Leader; Rod Miller of the Journal And Constitution in Atlanta, and Ken Shelby of The Advocate in Newark, Ohio.
New flat-panel and display technologies: This Monday, 9-10:15 a.m. session's speakers include Danny Chapchal of Cambridge Display Technology Ltd., United Kingdom; William Manning of Manning Ventures Inc., Rochester, N.Y., and Joel Pollack of Sharp Microelectronics Group, Vancouver, Wash.
Your systems-fantasy? Successful systems practices is the focus of this Monday, 10:30 a.m.-noon session. Speakers include Robert McClain of McClain Communications, Franklin, Mich.; Mark Owens of Pre-Press Solutions Inc., Billerica, Mass., and Tim Tomlinson of GTE, Austin, Texas.
NEXPO/Marketing joint session: The emphasis of this Tuesday, 9:45-11:15 a.m. meeting will be on the Disney connection. Speakers will include Judson Green, president of Walt Disney Attractions, on leadership, and Jim Cunningham of the Disney Institute, who will discuss "Service, Disney Style."
