More conference than ever
The NEXPO show is frequently thought of as just that -- a trade show. This year, the Newspaper Association of America (NAA) hopes to dispel that notion with almost 50 workshops and seminars. Here are but a few of the highlights:
The Media Center of the American Press Institute of Reston, Va., will provide workshops Friday, June 21, and Saturday, June 22; one track will be on convergence management and strategy, the other will be on convergence technology. A separate registration fee is required; call API at (703) 715-3318 or e-mail anachison@americanpressinstitute.org.
A session on the burgeoning topic of electronic tearsheets will be held Saturday, June 22, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Speakers will include M. Kirk Carr of the Wall Street Journal; Robert Dagostino of the Plain Dealer of Cleveland, Ohio; Hugh Gardiner of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution; Bill Marzahn of New York's Buffalo News; Bob Mason of the Dallas Morning News; Irene Mauch of the Boston Globe, and Gail Provenzano of Knight Ridder of San Jose. Modesty forbids naming the moderator.
At the same time, a session on using the Internet to improve relations with print-product customers will be held. Speakers are to include Chris Jennewein of the San Diego Union-Tribune and Tom Porter of Freedom Communications Inc. of Irvine, Calif. The moderator will be Leslye Brewer of the Northwest Florida Daily News of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
Suppliers and publishers will present ways to improve workflow and track display advertising automatically, Monday, June 24, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Speakers will include Laura Summers of Baseview Products Inc. of Ann Arbor, Mich.; Jason Holmes of The Vindicator of Youngstown, Ohio; Jeff Norris of the Morning News of Northwest Arkansas of Springdale, Ark.; Chuck Cole of North Carolina's Charlotte Observer, and Nam Friddle of the Washington Post.
An update on the trend toward computer-to-plate (CTP) will be Monday, June 24, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Speakers will include Bruce Harrison of Pisces of Nashua, N.H., and Andrew Tribute of Attributes Associates of the United Kingdom. Moderator will be Thomas Norton of Pennsylvania's York Newspaper Co.
Managing costs will be the topic in "Information Technology Strategies and Tactics," Tuesday, June 25, from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Speakers will include Jim Davis of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Steve Hannah of Knight Ridder; moderator will be Edward Baer of the Journal-Constitution.
