THE COLE PAPERS was a monthly newsletter until late 2004 and the front-page essay of each of those issues is archived here. Additionally, that page also shows the NEXPO preview issues, which, along with the front-page essays, can still be read for free. For a year starting in late 2004, the newsletter was a four-page weekly and none of that material is available free, though it is all still in the archives.

Additionally, we published the free, weekly Cole’s Newswire between 1995 and 2002. All of those newswires are available to browse here. These items are in the search archive as well.

The Cole Papers is written by journalism professionals who have background in technology. Most writers are in charge of editorial systems at newspapers and magazines or have been sometime in their careers. David Cole, the editor and publisher, spent almost a decade running a newspaper publishing systems department and for more than 15 years has been a consultant to the industry and leading industry analyst.

The Cole Papers has covered publishing technology and journalism since 1989 and was a leading voice during the transition from proprietary systems to off-the-shelf hardware and open source-based appliciations.

In the future, newspapers will produce a variety of editions, some on paper and some on-line. In The Cole Papers pre-press and “new media” are treated equally, so that articles in the newsletter pertain not only to the ink-on-dead-trees crowd, but also the Internet folks as well.
