Cole MiscellaneaThe uncategorizable -- from journalism to trains

Take a note

Surprisingly, one of the projects could actually function as an aid to working journalists, not just the people who are fascinated by new tech and bottom lines.

Audio Notebooks, still in prototype form and described by Research Assistant Lisa Stifelman, synchronizes handwritten notetaking with audio recording. Reporters still take notes with pen/pencil and paper.

At the bottom of every page of the notepad, which the reporter slides into the Audio Notebook, there is a binary code. Both the reporter's pen strokes, as well as turning pages of the notebook, provide indexing links between the written notes (also stored in digital format) and the audio recording. In a field test, trying to find specific information on a regular tape recording took six hours, compared to 15 minutes using the Audio Notebook.

It sounds easy to use, and like it could revolutionize some kinds of interviews.
