NEW ORLEANS -- The Newspaper Association of America opened NEXPO '97 with a Friday of "pre-show" workshops on June 20. The afternoon roster was a "Web Publishing 101," where on-line execs with a few years of experience talked about their core lessons of getting on-line.

Instead of "nuts and bolts," with lots of brand names abounding, these leading bleeders condensed what is essential to operating as an Internet service provider, web publisher or web server operator.

Some of the issues addressed:

• Operational considerations for publishing on the World Wide Web

• Components needed to establish a Web site

• Being an Internet services provider (ISP)

• Placing classified ads on-line

• Establishing and maintaining a content database

• Tools for converting existing documents into Web content

• Tools for producing Web content
