Journalism-related sites
-
Detroit Journal, Detroit News
- The newspaper strike in Detroit has spawned a strikers' paper (the Journal) and management at the News opened up what had heretofore been an experimental on-line paper. Characteristically, both papers are very good and both deserve your attention, regardless of where you fall on the strike issue.
- Dilbert gets canned
- Get the true story of why Scott Adams, Dilbert's author, is no longer employed by Pacific Bell. This is the link for the daily and Sunday color comics as well. Also, you can use this link to get you to other United Media comics and features.
- Journalism reviews
- The three major national magazines that cover the journalism business have rather limited pickings on their Web sites -- mostly just tables of content for their print editions. But there are a couple of hypertext-linked articles at the American Journalism Review. The Columbia Journalism Review and The Quill don't have much posted, but it's worth a trip just to pick up the bookmarks for future reference.
- Editor and Publisher
- The newspaper industry weekly has a Web site that includes a few stories from each week's magazine, along with Steve Outing's Online Newspaper Services Resource Directory and his daily on-line column.
- Michigan Press Photographers Association
- High-quality site put together by a statewide organization of photojournalists. Has good links on to other sites as well.
- Mindy's Home Page
- Mindy McAdams, formerly a staffer at the Washington Post's Digital Ink subsidiary, has a great personal site that discusses many issues of journalism and on-line -- lots of thoughts about copyediting and Videotex. Well worth the visit.
- Nando.Net
- The Raleigh News & Observer has been committed to new media -- specifically the Internet -- longer than most newspapers. This site has a lot of interesting items, including a premium service called Nando News Network. Also available at this site is The Freedom Forum (the former Gannett Foundation, with discussions of programs including Newseum, the news museum), The Nieman Foundation (a Harvard-based journalism foundation that weighs in with reports and conference information) and The Poynter Institute (the St. Petersburg, Fla.-based journalism foundation which has a great Hot News/Hot Research link).
- Newspaper Association of America
- This site contains links to a variety of NAA activities, not the least of which are the magazines Presstime and TechNews (wherein you can find columns by some guy named Cole). Despite being sponsored by a trade organization, some serious issues are discussed here.
- National Newspaper Association
- Representing the "community newspaper industry," NNA concerns itself more with smaller dailies and weeklies. In addition to membership information, the site also provides links to reporter resources.
- The Reporter Pages
- A gateway to a variety of pages hosted by the National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting and the Investigative Reporters and Editors, links can be found to the Asian American Journalists Association, the National Association of Black Journalists and the Web pages of the JForum, the CompuServe area for ... journalists.
- The Toasted Posties
- Unemployed? Yes. Bitter? Well, yes too. The former workers of the Houston Post have built a monument to their former newspaper that is filled with the kind of gallows humor that only a group of unemployed newspaper people can create. Full listings of "where are they now?" and major dumps on the former owner.
- The California/Nevada AP News Executives
- Fun little site that looks at the Associated Press from the perspective of West Coast newspaper editors. Includes a way-cool .WAV file of a teletype.
- California Journalism OnLine
- Co-sponsored by the California Society of Newspaper Editors, the California First Amendment Coalition, the California Newspaper Publishers Association and the California/Nevada AP News Executives (see above), the site includes a job bank, a "journalist's toolbox," a recent salary survey and everything you'd want to know about the CSNE annual convention.
- ANPA 1312 Wire Service Transmission Guidelines
- Now out of print -- pending the complete adoption of the new wire transmission standards -- the ANPA 1312 Wire Service Transmission Transmission Guidelines were converted to Adobe PDF format by The Associated Press. Using the link above, you can download this booklet. You will need the Acrobat Reader to view this document, but it's free.
