Who is Powell?I was born in Philadelphia, but my father was a Navy man for 26 years, so I got to move around a lot. By the time I was in high school, he had retired back to his home state, Nebraska, where I graduated from Kearney High School. I received a scholarship to the University of Denver, where I received my BA in History in 1966. Then I enlisted in the Air Force in 1967 and served two years in Colorado Springs as a Communications Center Specialist, where I learned to type 40 WPM on a teletype machine. After receiving my discharge in 1969, I used the GI Bill to go to Stanford to get an MA degree in Communication in 1974. It took so long because I went to work in Springfield, Illinois for the State Journal-Register, where I edited the weekend magazine from 1971 to 1973, overseeing its transition from hot to cold type. After receiving my MA, I worked for the City of Palo Alto for two years, then in 1977 began my full-time employment at the San Francisco Examiner. I am currently production manager of the Sunday San Francisco Examiner Magazine. It's produced completely on Macintoshes with Quark XPress. At the Examiner I have been a sports copy editor, layout editor and assistant systems editor for Macintoshs in my many years at the paper. When I was in systems, David M. Cole was my boss. I have been a Cole Papers correspondent since 1991. I bought my first Macintosh (a 512Ke) in 1985. Send e-mail to: gpowell@aol.com |
