The Cole Papers

Morning madness

The compelling nature of the annual newspaper exposition (contracted as "NEXPO") is such that the conference portion of the agenda frequently is forgotten.

Of course, the early morning aspect of these sessions might have a teeny bit to do with such an oversight.

NEXPO '95 will address several current issues at its sessions, which revolve around the theme "Putting the Future in Focus," June 24-28 at the Georgia World Congress Center. The highlights:

  • In addition to the customary Hot Ideas Breakfast, Sunday offers a symposium on techniques for using Adobe's Photoshop in newspapers.

Martha Reichold, the director of information systems at The Press of Atlantic City in New Jersey, will moderate the three-hour session that starts at 10 a.m. Speakers include Debi Rapson of Desktop Training Professionals of Bedford, N.H., and David Hinson of Applied Technology for Printing of Greensboro, N.C.

This session is repeated Wednesday between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m.

  • On Monday, just before the general session and keynote speaker U.S. Rep. Henry Hyde, R-Ill., a session on advertising methods and organization will be held from 8:30 to 10:45 a.m.

Speakers include Linda Case of the San Antonio (Texas) Express-News, Clark Lambert of the Kansas City (Mo.) Star, Grover Livingston of the Dallas Morning News, Thomas Brettingen of AP Adsend, Harold Bailes of Image Technology Inc. of Greensboro, N.C., Daniel Zito of Gannett Media Technologies International of Cincinnati, Günther Böttcher of Ifra (the European newspaper technology group) and George Irish of the Hearst Corp.

Moderator will be Louis Franconeri, vice president of operations at the San Antonio Express-News.

  • The issues of desktop technology and integration will be addressed in a session to be held from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. both Tuesday and Wednesday.

Moderated by Jim Hitchman, manager of newspaper technology at Tribune Co., speakers include Larry Hoffman of Ottaway Newspapers Inc., Peter Ickes of Integrated Systems Solutions Corp. of White Plains, N.Y., Dean Gerdes of the Chicago Tribune, Bob Palermini of the Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Sun-Sentinel, Don Oldham of Digital Technology International of Orem, Utah, and Marc Wilson of the Morris Newspaper Corp.

  • Two Tuesday sessions -- called "The Virtual Library" -- will address digital archiving issues.

Suppliers of archiving products will hold sway at the first session, from 8:30 to 9:40 a.m. On the panel will be Scott Brownstein of Applied Graphics Technologies of Rochester, N.Y.; Glenn Cruickshank of Tribune Solutions of Lewiston, Idaho; Joe DiMarino of VuText Library Services of Philadelphia; Fady Khairallah of the Associated Press; Tim Richardson of DataTimes of Oklahoma City, and David Tennenbaum of T/One Inc. of Quincy, Mass.

The second session, from 9:50 to 10:45 a.m., will provide a forum for newspaper executives. Speakers include M.J. Crowley of Philadelphia Newspapers Inc., Jerome McClendon of the Los Angeles Times and Dan Woods, formerly of the News & Observer of Raleigh, N.C.

  • "New Media -- Nut$, Bolt$ & Buck$" is the title of another Tuesday session focusing on audiotext and on-line services, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Speakers include David Scott of Access Atlanta, Greg Kearney of the Casper (Wyo.) Star-Tribune, Kevin Hoppes of the Pottsville (Pa.) Republican, Stan Linhorst of Syracuse Newspapers Inc. and Howard Query of the Quad City Times in Davenport, Iowa. The panel will be moderated by Morgan Dickerman III, publisher of the Wilson (N.C.) Daily Times.
