Adobe, a desktop and pre-press publishing software supplier based in San Jose, has announced that it will bundle its Web Collection of programs with the Power Macintosh G4 and PowerBook G3 in a special promotion with Apple Computer Corp. of Cupertino, Calif. The Adobe Web Collection includes GoLive 4.0, Illustrator 8.0 and Photoshop 5.5 software. Adobe also announced that its plug-ins for After Effects 4.1, the visual effects and motion graphics program, and Photoshop 5.5 have been optimized for Apple's new systems. This promotion is priced at $599 when purchased between Dec. 7 and Feb. 29 with a qualified Power Macintosh or PowerBook through a participating Apple-authorized reseller or The Apple Store. After Effects and Photoshop software plug-ins for the Apple Mac G4 are free via the web site. Power Mac G4 customers will be able to build web sites and graphics faster because of the Adobe Web Collection applications' common user interface and full integration. The Photoshop 5.5 "Altivec core" plug-in for overall performance, plus a second plug-in for specific lighting effects, offer significant improvements in processor-intensive tasks, the company says. CCI, a Danish publishing systems supplier with U.S. offices in Kennesaw, Ga., has announced the recent sale of its AdDesk System to the TORONTO STAR, a long-time customer which circulates 700,000 weekend copies in Canada's capital city. The system was developed jointly with Neasi-Weber International, a Northridge, Calif.-based supplier of management systems for advertising, circulation and pre-prints and a CCI partner since October 1998. It will be the first North American installation of the full AdDesk suite and ADMARC replacement. The AdDesk system will handle more than 350 users, the company said, including 40 in production/tracking, 60 in accounting and 250 or more in advertising sales and management. It will consist of CCI's AdDesk Production, NWI's Accounts Receivable system and the joint multimedia AdDesk Sales management system. This new system will replace an earlier CCI ad production system, an NWI ADMARC system and a number of advertising and classified systems developed in-house by the newspaper. CCI Europe is on the Web at http://www.ccieurope.com; Neasi-Weber is at http://www.nwintl.com/. The news industry standards organization has established a new operating structure, IPTC2000, to develop end-to-end XML news interchange. A single XML-based standard called NewsML will cover all aspects of news creation, storage and delivery. NewsML will build on the intellectual property invested in existing IPTC standards and draw on appropriate existing and emerging W3C recommendations. IPTC's first XML-based standard, News Industry Text Format (NITF), and Information Interchange Model (IIM) will form the basis of NewsML. The Windsor, Berkshire, United Kingdom, organization's representatives said that IPTC2000 will help make the news more searchable and accessible, as well as presentable by the current and future technologies by emphasizing added content value in an industry-standard way. IPTC Chairman Peter Muller added that the new structure aims to speed up the standards-setting process. IPTC is on the Web at http://www.iptc.org/ MetaCreations Corp. has announced it will dump its graphics products to focus on e-commerce visualization solutions for the Web. The company said it no longer sees the professional graphics business as a growth sector when compared to the substantial potential in e-commerce visualization. It is anticipated that the Carpenteria, Calif.-based company will lay off 100 of its 230 workers. The supplier's 11 graphics products, including Infini-D, Ray Dream Studio and 3D Suite, will be sold to generate funds, though MetaCreations will continue to provide technical support for these customers. MetaCreations' e-commerce visualization business is centered on the company's MetaStream technology, which is designed for the streaming and display of interactive 3D virtual product presentation over the Web. The restructuring is expected to result in a loss of about $38 million to $42 million this quarter. Cash balances are projected at $36 million to $38 million. The company also predicts revenues this quarter will be significantly lower than analysts' forecasts. Metacreations is on the Web at http://www.metacreations.com/ The Vienna, Va.-based trade association has announced the latest version of its ROP NEWSPAPER COLOR INK BOOK. The new book, Volume 9, is designed to show advertisers all colors available in newspaper printing, includes examples of flexo printing (in addition to offset and letterpress), and has been reformatted to resemble the "fan books" used by advertisers. The format is now a 10-by-2 inch, spiral-bound book with a vinyl slipcase and includes pages of clippable color chips that can be cut out and distributed as samples. It features nine additional colors for dailies that print with NAA-COLOR inks to Specifications for Newsprint Advertising Production (SNAP) guidelines. NAA COLOR INK BOOK, Vol. 9, is $25 for NAA members, $35 for non-members, with volume discounts available. More information on NAA and the new product can be found on-line at http://www.naa.org/products/form.html. The New York City-based Internet advertising company and advertising server software developer has said that it will adapt a new network structure that has proven successful in its European operations. Real Media will now package content sites together with vertical content areas from its local news sites to offer marketers the brand recognition of the vertical, in combination with the high demographic characteristics of users who access the Web via local newspapers. GOLFonline.com, MONEY.net, USAToday.com are among the lead web brands for verticals such as the company's Sports Network, Personal Finance Network and News & Information Network. The company has been selling a portfolio of sites in Europe for two years with strong results. In the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Switzerland, Real Media represents portals exclusively (Excite in France and German, Yahoo in Switzerland), strongly branded web sites and networks such as Bloomberg and dedicated vertical sites in music, sports, games and national news. They are often sold in combination with newspaper on-line properties such as THE TIMES and SUNDAY TIMES (London), LE MONDE, LES ECHO, SUDDEUTSCHE ZEITUNG, IRISH TIMES, DE TELEGRAAF and EL PAIS. Real Media is on the Web at http://www.realmedia.com/. The Sacramento-based supplier of content-management systems has announced the sale of its Insiight Editorial system to ARD-Online-Kanal, a division of Allgemeiner Deutscher Rundfunk, the digital TV broadcaster and operator of Channel One in Berlin. Insiight will be used for monitoring page creation and structuring digital pages using XML. Among the initial project phases will be launch of a TV program-planning tool to organize the production and start times of shows. Among the reasons for selecting SII was its centralized content management, browser-based technology, cross-media capabilities and accessibility on one large intranet, the company said. Insiight's open architecture was key to Kanal's selection, it said, because it can link to Kanal's existing "OpenTV" application, a European standard for delivering interactive television services and content, as well as other content sources. Plans are in place to migrate the OpenTV standard to the new Multimedia Home Platform (MHP) in Europe. The size and value of the installation were not announced. SII is on the Web at http://www.sii.com/. -- 30 -- This issue of COLE'S NEWSWIRE was compiled by Marion J. Love and Linda Neuman.
