To submit material for consideration, please deliver electronically to news@colegroup.com. @Home Corp., a provider of interactive services via video cable infrastructure based in Mountain View, Calif., has announced that the HotWired Network, the NEW YORK TIMES on the Web and USA TODAY will use the @Home Network to create Internet programming. @Home Network will provide its technical and marketing resources. The multimedia programming will be available to @Home users by early December. HotWired Inc., an interactive programming company, is developing an expanded version of its home page for the @Home Network that will offer @Home users multimedia applications, including advanced on-line audio capabilities. In the first quarter of 1997, HotWired plans to unveil "push media" applications that will enable @Home users to click and drag an active screen from the HotWired Network site to their desktop for continuous viewing. The NEW YORK TIMES on the Web will be presenting a multimedia version of "The Age of the Female Icon," based on a Nov. 24 special issue of the NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE. The project will include audio, video and slide-show components suited to high-bandwidth users. Future efforts will include photo essays. USA TODAY will animate its on-line news, weather and snapshot graphics in a movie-like format. @Home may be visited on the World-Wide Web at http://www.home.net. Berkeley Systems, a software supplier based in Berkeley, Calif., has announced that its Virtual News Room is live. The site -- Berkeley also announced that beZerk, its on-line entertainment network at http://www.bezerk.com/, will be open to the public in early December. This free site features programming and integrated advertising. Cascade Systems, a software developer based in Andover, Mass., has announced its support of Adobe Acrobat 3.0 software in its digital content management products. Cascade's MediaSphere, a multi-media library and archive system, indexes the text of Portable Document Format (PDF) files which allows users to search the content of a PDF document. When the MediaSphere search function finds a match in a PDF document, Cascade's Plug-in opens the document and displays the page where the match occurs. In addition to saving time for the user by going directly to the page in the document, the search words from the MediaSphere query are highlighted on the PDF page. A demonstration of MediaSphere/W3 showing integration with Acrobat 3.0 software is available on Cascade's demo Web site at http://w3.cascadenet.com/. Personal Library Software, an archive software provider based in Rockville, Md., has announced that Pantheon Inc. of Seattle has joined the PLS Business Partners Program, Pantheon will add to its Builder 2.O product line PLS's search and agent technology for on-line editions of newspapers. Builder automatically converts newspaper stories to HTML, and creates archival indexes which allow on-line editors to track and update time-sensitive stories on the web site. PLS products will add scalable full-text search and agent technology to Pantheon's publishing solutions. The CHICAGO TRIBUNE won the first National Association of Real Estate Editors Award for best real estate web site, part of the association's 1996 Journalism Competition. Internet Producer William Swislow took the first place award in this category for the design and content of http://chicago.tribune.com/homes/. Real estate reporter J. Linn Allen received second place in the best newspaper report by an individual for "Bad builder leaves a trail of frustration." Free-lance writer Pamela Dittmer McKuen won second place in the best serial report category for her series in the TRIBUNE on how the real estate market has changed sociologically, legally and technically. PrePRESS SOLUTIONS, a hardware and software supplier based in East Hanover, N.J., has announced an upgrade to its Panther RIP. Release 6 allows file management operations (copy, rename, delete) to be performed directly within the Macintosh Finder or Windows NT File Manager instead of requiring a proprietary application. High-resolution files may be stored anywhere on the network, eliminating the need for specialized server software and additional hardware. Now supported is RIP Tracker, an intranet imagesetting system management application. With RIP Tracker, users remotely retrieve RIP status information from virtually any workstation on the network. Release 6 can generate ink density maps of pages output to a Panther image recorder. An enhanced screen preview in Release 6 of the Panther RIP provides both fit-to-window and actual-size modes. Existing customers may upgrade to Release 6.0 for $495. The STAR TRIBUNE of Minneapolis has begun beta testing on WorkAvenue.com, an Internet-based search tool designed to match employers and job seekers. Seventeen companies will offer input during the beta testing period, with a commercial launch scheduled for early 1997. WorkAvenue.com matches job candidates with employment opportunities on a ranked basis. For those without Internet access, the STAR TRIBUNE will conduct on-line searches. WorkAvenue.com features employment classifieds with expanded job descriptions and company profiles.
