  • AMERICA EAST
    America East, the newspaper operations and technology conference to be held March 10-13, 1997, in Hershey, Pa., has announced a print quality contest. Newspapers from Maine to Maryland are being invited to participate in one of four circulation divisions.

    Papers will be evaluated on the basis of ink laydown (black only and color), registration, halftone quality, page alignment and overall print appearance. Three independent judges will evaluate the entries.

    England-based Digital Ink (Solutions) has created a web site -- http://www.digital-ink.co.uk -- for printers and pre-press companies wishing to find suppliers and industry-specific information on the Internet.

    The site covers scanners, finishing companies, trade magazines and shows, print colleges. Links at the site jump not to a manufacturer's home page but to page(s) dealing with the requested product. This feature saves time searching through large sites for the desired pages. There are over 600 links to industry related sites in the U.S., Europe, Australia and the Far East.

    Digital Ink (Solutions) Ltd., a technical and creative consultancy, was formed in August by Andy Houldsworth, formerly sales director of Monotype Systems Ltd.


  • DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY INTERNATIONAL
    DT, a production systems supplier based in Orem, Utah, has announced that the two daily papers published in Liverpool, England, the DAILY POST (78k, morning) and LIVERPOOL ECHO (177k, evening), have signed an order for DT's editorial system to be supplied by DT's business partner in the UK, DPS Typecraft Ltd. The initial order is worth $1.8 million.

    DT also announced that the TORONTO STAR (510k, morning) is the first DT customer to install DT's databases on an NT server, an ad system for its real estate paper.

The products include the Shira Image Server, Image Manager, TIFF/IT Stream (a method for streamlining PostScript workflow) and Scatter Proof (for maximizing use of color proofing engines).

    Shira also has announced that it has integrated its CTP Image Server with computer-to-plate platesetters made by Gerber Systems of South Windsor, Conn.

    SND, an association of designers and journalists based in Providence, R.I., has announced that the 17th edition of its annual book, "The Best of Newspaper Design," is now available. The $45 paperback volume features 256 pages of color illustrations of more than 1100 examples of newspaper design, illustration, graphics and typographic excellence drawn from SND's 17th annual Best of Newspaper Design competition.
