  • ARCHETYPE INC.
Archetype, a production software supplier based in Burlington, Mass., has been selected by System Integrators Inc. of Sacramento, Calif., to create a WYSIWYG composition system for classified ads. The two companies are building an 850-seat classified advertising system for Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ), a German and Eastern European newspaper chain.

The SII-Archetype licensing agreement calls for Archetype to incorporate its NuDoc technology and NDL language into the system, which will enable ad takers to use forms or models to quickly build ads by "pouring" text and images into intelligent templates.

NuDoc is software designed to author elaborate pages for the Internet and other media. It consists of a language specification (NDL), and a NuDoc engine that provides a foundation for the development of NuDoc-compatible applications. Using this engine, NuDoc applications provide page layout including sophisticated typography, rotation and layering.

Running on Windows 95 or Windows NT, the new WYSIWYG composition system will allow ad takers to build multi-lingual ads, and customers to place ads over the phone or from hundreds of retail locations around Germany. PostScript files will be generated at the site of entry, enabling local proofing. Once the ads are completed, final PostScript will be passed to the SII pagination system.

WAZ plans to use Archetype's WYSIWYG system in the third quarter of 1997.
