  • ASSOCIATED PRESS
    New York-based AP has announced a long-term contract with the British Broadcasting Corp. to develop and install what it calls the Electronic News Production System, or ENPS, which will incorporate in one box for each BBC staffer access to text, audio and video files. BBC chose AP from among 50 information technology companies, AP said.

    New technology products based on AP's work for the BBC will be introduced to other markets in 1997, AP said.


  • BASEVIEW PRODUCTS INC.
    Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Baseview, developer of Macintosh-based newspaper production systems, has announced record results for its fiscal year from July 1995 to June 1996. During that period, the subsidiary of Harris Publishing Systems Corp. installed products at 258 sites and reported record sales; dollar amounts were not disclosed.


  • 4-SIGHT
    4-Sight, a developer of ISDN software based in West Des Moines, Iowa, has announced its decision to incorporate an MLPPP protocol stack into its iSDN Manager products. MLPPP -- Multi-link point-to-point protocol -- is used to access the Internet at high bandwidth. Its adoption by 4-Sight will bring 4-Sight users increased 'Net access speed and high bandwidth router connectivity.

    4-Sight said it decided to use MLPPP to ensure that iSDN Manager will enable complete interoperability between environments. With iSDN Manager running on top of a router connection, users now have the option to communicate over a wide-area network, or peer-to-peer for secure file transfer.


  • GANNETT MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES INTERNATIONAL
    Cincinnati-based GMTI has announced three recent installations of its AdLink for Real Estate remote ad delivery product at the OCALA (Fla.) STAR-BANNER (49k morning); ASHEVILLE (N.C.) CITIZEN-TIMES (48k morning), and York Newspaper Co. of York, Pa., publishers of the YORK DAILY RECORD (41k morning) and YORK DISPATCH (40k evening).

    GMTI also has announced it will its AdLink and Mobile Advertising Sales System (MASS) products at America West Oct. 23-25 in Reno, Nev.

  • MONOTYPE TYPOGRAPHY INC.
    Monotype Typography, a font supplier based in Elk Grove Village, Ill., has announced that Sun Microsystems of Mountain View, Calif., has chosen Monotype as the source of core fonts to be included in Sun's Solaris UNIX-based operating system.

    Among the TrueType fonts to be included are Times New Roman, Monotype Century Schoolbook, Bookman Old Style and Corsiva.

    Monotype already supplied core fonts to Microsoft's Windows, IBM's OS/2 and Apple Macintosh operating systems.

    In other news from Monotype Typography:

    -- Electronic distribution of Monotype fonts is now possible through DTP OnLine, a section of the DTP Forum on CompuServe. More than 3000 PostScript Type 1 fonts for PCs and Macs are available at 10 to 15 percent below retail cost.

    -- Monotype has become an authorized distributor of the Fontek range of fonts from ITC, in both PostScript and TrueType formats

    -- The 800-item FontFont library of typefaces from FontShop International now is being marketed in the America from Monotype. Available are text, Cyrillic and technical faces.

    New York-based PR Newswire has announced that beginning Oct. 15, it will make images and graphics available on its bulletin-board service operated by NewsCom Inc. of Coral Gables, Fla.

    PRNewsFotos, will deliver images to NewsCom's BBS for the service's 1,000 worldwide subscribers to download. PRNewsFotos is the result of a strategic alliance with Feature Photo Service, which will provide users with direct access to pictures from 600 leading U.S. newspapers via the AP Photo Express Network.

    Media companies that do not subscribe to NewsCom can receive a free account and software to access PRNewsFotos. Software is available for MAC, Windows 3.1 and Windows 95.

    Photos will also be available on NewsCom's World-Wide Web site at http://www.newscom.com. Pictures on the web site may be downloaded only by registered media users.


  • TRIBUNE SOLUTIONS
    Tribune Solutions, the electronic publishing division of the Tribune Publishing Co. of Lewiston, Idaho, has announced it will move to Salt Lake City in January 1997.

    Founded in 1989, Tribune Solutions developed three archiving systems for publishers; among its 110 customers are the LEWISTON MORNING TRIBUNE, NEW YORK DAILY NEWS and WASHINGTON POST.

    Glenn Cruickshank, manager of Tribune Solutions since its inception, will move to Salt Lake City, where the company will be based at the SALT LAKE TRIBUNE. The Salt Lake newspaper is owned by Kearns-Tribune Corp.; its subsidiary newspapers include the LEWISTON MORNING TRIBUNE; MOSCOW-PULLMAN DAILY NEWS, which serves Moscow, Idaho, and Pullman, Wash., and SPARKS (Nev.) TRIBUNE. Cruickshank, 42, will be in charge of electronic and on-line delivery operations at the Kearns-Tribune newspapers.

    Cruickshank, a former reporter, photographer and manager of information systems at the LEWISTON MORNING TRIBUNE, is responsible for development of three Tribune Solutions products: PhotoView, a picture archive system; NewsView Library System, a text archiving system, and Connections32, a connectivity product and library archive for newspapers entering into electronic publishing.

    LEXIS-NEXIS of Dayton, Ohio, has marketed Tribune Solutions products under the NewsView Solutions product group since 1991. LEXIS-NEXIS, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc., may be visited on the World-Wide Web at http://www.reed-elsevier.com.

    ULTRE, a division of Linotype-Hell based in Melville, N.Y., has introduced its Java-based World-Wide Web site, http://www.ultre.com. General information about ULTRE's imagesetters is available at the site. In addition, distributors have access through a password-protected area to an on-line client manual, direct e-mail contact with key ULTRE staff, and data on training programs.

    Xitron, a division of Autologic Information International based in Ann Arbor, Mich., has opened its site on the World-Wide Web at http://www.xitron.com. The site provides information about the company's history, its products -- RIPS, imagesetters, multiplexers and custom interface applications -- and technical support.
