  • ADVERTISING COMMUNICATIONS INTERNATIONAL
    ACI, a software developer based in Cambridge, Mass., has announced that the first customer for its AdDirect system for digital ad delivery is the BOSTON GLOBE (508k morning). AdDirect receives and routes digital ad files as they arrive via modem at the GLOBE, and either sends an in-house e-mail notice of delivery or prints a job ticket.

  • APPLE COMPUTER INC.
    Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple has announced the availability of ColorSync 2.1, its updated color management architecture for the Macintosh which assures more predictable and accurate color from applications, scanners, digital cameras, displays and printers. Version 2.1 features named color profile support, enhanced hi-fi color functions, expanded bitmap formats, increased speed, and a new way of embedding profiles in documents.


  • ASSOCIATED PRESS
    AP, the New York-based news cooperative, has announced that the TULSA WORLD (172k morning) has converted from film to digital photography with the purchase of 10 NC2000e digital cameras. The NC2000e was developed in concert with Eastman Kodak of Rochester, N.Y., using a camera body made by Nikon.

    AP said the WORLD is the first U.S. newspaper to convert to digital photography. Each photographer carries a camera and laptop computer.

    The FORT LAUDERDALE (Fla.) SUN-SENTINEL (256k morning) also has purchased digital cameras from AP -- eight NC2000es and two EOS DCS3c cameras, which use a Canon body.

    AP also has introduced StocksExpress, a one-third-page market summary that features as many 100 local stock listings, mutual funds and AP's graphic that charts the Dow Jones Industrial Average. StocksExpress is geared to papers with circulation of less than 30k; the ST. ALBANS (Vt.) MESSENGER (5k evening) has been using the product since July.

    Rates start at $25 a week, or $15 for a weekend summary.


  • CASCADE SYSTEMS INC.
    Cascade, an archiving software developer based in Andover, Mass., has announced a further investment of $2 million by a current investor, Adobe Ventures Inc. Cascade makes MediaSphere, a multimedia archive; DataFlow, a workflow management system; ImageFlow, an OPI server, and the ORION RIP and output system.

    ECRM, an output device manufacturer based in Tewksbury, Mass., has announced its acquisition of Holotek Ltd. of Henrietta, N.Y. Holotek designs and develops custom optical subsystems and imaging devices.


  • 4-SIGHT
    4-Sight, an ISDN software developer based in West Des Moines, Iowa, has announced plans to introduce iSDN Manager for Windows 2.0 (which will support Windows 3.1, Windows 95 and Windows NT). The $2795 single-user version of iSDN Manager for Windows will be available Nov. 1, with a multi-user solution to follow in the next quarter.

    iSDN Manager for Windows 2.0 will support a number of ISDN hardware interface cards. It is compatible with other 4-Sight iSDN Manager solutions, enabling users to send files between Windows and Macintosh systems.

    iSDN Manager for Windows 2.0 will utilize the CAPI stack for supporting Windows devices. Throughput will be at data rates of 1 megabyte to 10 megabytes per minute.

    4-Sight also has announced that it and database software developer Canto Software Inc. of San Francisco have created a remote image database solution by integrating Canto's Cumulus Network Image Database 3.0 and 4-Sight iSDN Manager. With this product, users may remotely browse an image database through the Internet and have images delivered via a direct dial-up ISDN connection.

    Canto's products, Cumulus Network Image Database and Cumulus Desktop Image Database, are tools for managing digital image databases.


  • MANAGEMENT PROCESS INTEGRATORS
    MPI, based in Scottsdale, Ariz., has announced that Copley Newspapers' Fox Valley Press in suburban Chicago has installed MPI's GuideLines, a database application for storing and retrieving editorial listings such as entertainment and dining guides, police blotters, calendars and social events.

    With GuideLines, the FOX VALLEY VILLAGES 60504 has pared from 60 minutes to 10 minutes the time it takes to produce one Quark XPress tabloid page containing its restaurant guide, movie reviews, community calendar, entertainment guide and birth announcements. Nine other Fox Valley Press Chicago-area papers plan to implement GuideLines.

    PC-based GuideLines runs in Windows 3.1 or higher, and uses the Microsoft Jet SQL-compliant relational database to store and export listings information. The ODBC-compliant software also runs on databases such as Oracle, Sybase and Informix.

    Management Process Integrators is a consulting group and integrator whose clients include TV GUIDE, Knight-Ridder New Media, Philadelphia Newspapers and American Color.


  • PUBLISHING PARTNERS INTERNATIONAL
    PPI, a newspaper industry software developer based in Manchester, N.H., has announced three recent installations of its Advertising Management System:

    -- Brooks Community News, Norwalk, Conn. (eight weekly and monthly publications, 108k total): 17-seat classified/retail ad order entry and billing, accounts receivable and contract management.

    -- METRO COMMUNITY NEWS, Buffalo, N.Y. (weekly, 290k): 14-seat classified and retail ad order entry on dual Pentium Novell servers; replaces a Triple-I TECS/2 system.

    -- OSHKOSH (Wis.) NORTHWESTERN (24k morning): 10-seat classified and retail ad order entry, billing and accounts receivable and contract management on dual Compaq servers; Informatel classified and retail pagination. Replaces Dewar classified and Collier-Jackson receivables systems.


  • SOFTAD
    SoftAd, a developer of sales force automation solutions based in Mill Valley, Calif., has announced installation of its Media SalesExcelerator at the DAILY OKLAHOMAN of Oklahoma City (210k morning). The Windows-based software provides sales reps with customer ad histories, media cost comparisons, ad presentations, and rating and scheduling in the field.
