Los Altos, Calif.-based BroadVision has announced that its personalized information delivery service on the Internet, The Angle, has drawn more than 10,000 customers in its first three weeks on-line. Database records show most users visit the site, http://www.theangle.com, several times a day. CE Engineering, a publishing system software and hardware company based in Loomis, Calif., has announced immediate shipment of Decade Mac 4.0. Enhancements over release 3.5.3 include improved communications code for improved performance and reliability, auto-backup, new preference settings options and support for keyboard files generated by Keygen 2.1 CE Engineering may be visited on the World-Wide Web at http://www.ceengineering.com. The Lakeland, Mass. provider of images of retail items has announced that it has agreed with the Associated Press of New York that it will provide digital retail images to AP AdSEND customers nationwide. AP AdSEND is the Associated Press' digital advertising delivery service that transmits advertisements for more than 300 retailers and ad agencies to more than 1100 U.S. newspapers. dibs now has a database of more than 30,000 images of retail grocery and drug products; the company estimates that by the end of the year the database will reach 50,000 images. dibs plans to expand into other retail markets -- electronics, automotive and general merchandise -- in early 1997. AdSEND newspapers equipped with file servers would receive their dibs retail images via satellite to those servers. AP newspapers not equipped with AdSEND file servers would access the dibs retail images via conventional phone lines as well as the Internet. The dibs' QueuePic software will be distributed free to all Associated Press customers to allow direct access to the dibs image bank. IPA System, based in Cheltenham, England, is preparing to introduce eNews, a software product that will automatically publish on the World-Wide Web stories from the IPA Editorial systems, q-Edit (for the Macintosh) and mETS(for Windows), and other electronic editorial systems. The standard version of eNews will include eNews.cgi for WebStar on the Mac, eNews AdServer and a Quark XPress XTension (currently Mac only). An enhanced version, eNews Gold, will include the ability to publish a complete XPress page via eNews Virtual Page Technology. The common gateway interface works on a basket metaphor; each basket can have an index page and a story template assigned to it for use when converting the incoming story to HTML. Netscape Navigator is used to add pictures to stories or alter index order. The AdServer allows advertisements to be dynamically placed on pages from a list of available ads. The Gold version of eNews will support the publishing of whole pages. A reader will be able flick from page to page, then click on an area of the page for close reading. Two of its U.S. companies are Monotype Systems Inc. of Rolling Meadows, Ill., and Freedom System Integrators of Wichita, Kan. Linotype-Hell AG, of Eschborn, Germany, has announced that its independent shareholders have offered Commerzbank around 700,000 shares (29 percent) of the company«s total equity capital at a price of DM 95 per DM 50 nominal value share. As this meets the conditions of a share offer made in July, Commerzbank will commence acquisition of tendered shares. The bank will sell these shares -- as well as Siemens AG and Frega Vermšgensverwaltungsgesellschaft mbH, which together own 50 percent plus one share of the company«s equity capital -- to Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG as soon as the German Federal Cartel Office has given its approval. Maxum, a developer of Macintosh World-Wide Web server tools based in Streamwood, Ill., has shipped both an upgrade to PageSentry Pro and a new product, PageSentry. In addition to nonstop Web site monitoring, PageSentry 2.0 and PageSentry Pro 2.0 now provide monitoring for FTP, SMTP (e-mail), DNS and Telnet services. PageSentry and PageSentry Pro use these high-level client services to test the whole server operation. PageSentry Pro now allows the addition of 100 Sentries to monitor large enterprise sites and Internet service providers. PageSentry is designed to meet the needs of departmental or small enterprise server monitoring. PageSentry applications are used to send alpha-numeric pages or automatically restart servers. Current license holders may get an upgrade by downloading the PageSentry Pro 2.0 demonstration version from Maxum's web site. PageSentry Pro retails for $349, PageSentry for $149. Monotype, an output device supplier based in Rolling Meadows, Ill., has announced the donation of nine scholarships worth over $17,500 to leadership training courses put on by Advanced Leadership Inc. of Kansas City, Mo. Monotype and Freedom System Integrators, a newspaper systems supplier based in Wichita, Kan., co-hosted teamwork and pagination sessions at the Mid-America Newspaper Conference, held Sept. 12-14, in Lake Ozark, Mo., where the scholarships were announced. The 36th annual conference focused on pre-press and post-press technologies, training workshops and the future of newspapers. The conference drew a newspaper audience of close to 200 from 12 states. The scholarships, which were awarded to nine newspapers attending the conference, included tuition for 18 students to ALI's three-day course, "Getting Results Through People." The second annual Newspaper Association of America (NAA) Newspaper Operations SuperConference will be held Jan. 12-17, 1997, at the Hilton in Walt Disney World Village, Orlando, Fla. SuperConference '97 will provide a wide-reaching forum for industry professionals to explore four areas of newspaper operations in one week: pre-press; press and materials; health and safety, and packaging and distribution. This year's conference will include demonstrations of the latest related technologies, plus panel discussions on best practices, electronic publishing, digital advertising, new media, digital and shaftless presses, automated distribution systems, alternative sources for newsprint, newsprint waste control, ergonomics, workplace safety, microzoning, quality in operations and more. The 2040 registered media users of Wieck Photo DataBase are being notified to reprogram their dialup software to reflect a new area code. The change, which went into effect Sept. 15, was caused by Southwestern Bell's need for an additional area code in the Dallas area. Wieck's new area code is 972, instead of the former 214. All BBS numbers will remain the same except for the area code. The main voice line will be (972) 392-0888 instead of (214) 392-0888.
