  • ADOBE SYSTEMS INC.
Adobe Systems of San Jose, Calif., has announced Adobe PostScript Level 3, the next generation of Adobe's imaging language which has been adopted as a worldwide output standard. PostScript Level 3 offers original equipment manufacturer (OEM) customers and end users enhancements in printing functionality, performance, reliability and quality. It will enable users to print complex graphics and World-Wide Web content more easily.

PostScript Level 3 offers Advanced Page Processing, Enhanced Image Technology, NetWorks System and PlanetReady Printing. Advanced Page Processing significantly increases the performance of an imaging system -- the printing system will process each component as a separate object in order to optimize imaging throughput. PostScript Level 3 will support direct processing of web content, including Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files.

Adobe has completed Adobe PostScript Level 3 language feature development and will now begin its system integration process. Delivery to OEM printing system manufacturers and third-party development partners is expected in December 1996. As OEMs begin to deliver products based on Adobe PostScript Level 3 in the second half of 1997, Adobe will release data about the Adobe PostScript Level 3 operators and language-specific features.

  • APPLE COMPUTER INC.
Apple Computer, based in Cupertino, Calif., has introduced faster and feature-enhanced workgroup servers and network servers with up to 200 MHz PowerPC 604e microprocessors. The new systems are the MacOS-based Workgroup Server 8550/200 and 7250/120 and the AIX-based Network Server 700/200.

With an enclosure designed for easy serviceability, the Apple Network Server 700/200 becomes the flagship of Apple's departmental server family and is powered by a 200 MHz 604e PowerPC processor. The Network Server family has been further enhanced with the availability of a high-capacity 3.5" Fast/Wide SCSI-2 disk drive (9 gigabyte), a high-capacity 8mm tape drive (20 gigabyte uncompressed/40 gigabyte compressed), an 8x-speed CD-ROM drive and a PCI FDDI card. The 8mm tape drive from Exabyte is capable of backing up data at a rate of up to 6 megabytes per second (40 gigabytes in two hours).

For existing Network Server 500/132 and Network Server 700/150 customers, a 200 MHz CPU upgrade card is planned.

Apple also announced the development of symmetric multi-processing (SMP) capabilities in its Network Server line. Apple's first SMP server systems, expected to be available in early 1997, feature two 200 MHz PowerPC 604e processors and 1 megabyte of in-line L2 cache per processor to provide performance increases of up to 1.8 times for processor-intensive server applications and environments. SMP upgrades are planned to be available for existing Network Server customers.

  • CLICKSHARE CORP.
Clickshare, of Williamstown, Mass., has brought on-line its multi-site, single-ID, Internet micropayment system. Users began clicking on -- and paying for -- information on-line. Purchases in the system's first three days of operation, over a weekend, totaled $62.60 by more than a dozen customers.

With Clickshare's Internet Information Utility, publishers can charge for information on the 'Net. Clickshare allows users to have a single ID and password yet gain access to multiple web sites. It uses the company's proprietary Digital Calling Card technology to track user movements and settle charges. Its software is a server add-on, not a user application.

Users can sign up once, provide credit card information either on-line or off-line, log in once per session and buy information from many sites. At day's end, they get an e-mail summary of locations and purchases, which show up on their next credit card statement.

PPI, a newspaper industry software developer based in Manchester, N.H., has announced that USA TODAY (1.5m morning) has chosen PPI's Advertising Management System (AMS) for its classified ad pilot project.

AMS runs in Windows NT on an SQL server using Microsoft Office applications. The goal of the pilot project is to consolidate all of the Washington-based global newspaper's classified advertising activities, including order entry, billing and accounts receivable, in one location. Eventually it will encompass classifieds from Europe and Asia as well.

The PPI system will replace current Atex and CompuText installations. The project was due to begin this month and be completed by year's end.

  • SYSTEM INTEGRATORS INC.
System Integrators, a newspaper industry software supplier based in Sacramento, Calif., has introduced a certification program for developers who integrate their solutions with SII's publishing systems.

Customers who purchase third-party software products that are certified as "SII Integrated" can be assured of proven compatibility with SII's systems. The first companies to provide products that are certified SII Integrated are Managing Editor Inc. of Jenkintown, Pa., and Multi-Ad Services Inc. of Peoria, Ill.

To ease integration of third-party apps with SII products, SII created SIAM (System Integrators Ad Management) and SAILS (SII Ad Integration Layout System). Both products work in conjunction with SII's SIIMac, which provides integration for Apple Macintosh workstations and Tandem's line of fault-tolerant servers.

With SIAM, users may create ads on their Macintosh workstations and store them in SII's Tandem-based graphics database. SAILS allows users to paginate ROP ads using third-party applications running on the Macintosh and to store the resulting pages in SII's page database. These pages may then be called by SII's Editorial Layout products.

SII may be visited on the web at http://sii.com/.
