DataStream Imaging Systems Inc. of Lexington, Ky., has announced a suite of pre-press tools called GymnastXT, designed to facilitate use of Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files for cross-platform document exchange within Quark XPress. First to be released is GymnastXT, an XPress XTension that will allow users to import PDF documents directly into XPress as Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) files. The images can then be cropped and separated like any other graphics. GymnastXT will convert the selected page from the PDF document into an EPS graphic and import the EPS file into an XPress picture box in one step, eliminating the need to convert PDF files first. GymnastXT is expected to be released by the end of September 1996. The next planned product is GymnastXTend, which will import a PDF file as an XPress document, allowing it to be edited and modified. GymnastXTend is expected to be released in the first half of 1997. Available for the Macintosh and PowerPC platforms for use with Quark XPress 3.31 or greater, and Adobe Type Manager, GymnastXT will be available through DataStream Imaging Systems and XChange of San Francisco. Icanon, a software developer based in Fort Washington, Pa., recently installed its NEWZware business office software at the EVENING SUN of Hanover, Pa. (21k evening), and three newspapers in Canada -- THE OBSERVER of Sarnia, Ontario (22k evening); THE GUARDIAN of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island (23k morning); EVENING NEWS of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia (10k evening), and DAILY NEWS of Truro, Nova Scotia (8k evening). With LEXIS-NEXIS of Dayton, Ohio, SECURITY and SDM magazines, Cahners publications covering the private security industry, are launching a free information service on the World-Wide Web. Nando.net, a pioneer in on-line information delivery based in Raleigh, N.C., has introduced a web site covering the national political campaigns with exclusive reports and polling information.
