Paris-based AFP has announced the launch of an on-line Olympic service providing up-to-the-minute news and photos about this summer's Atlanta Games. The AFP Olympic Report offers an updated summary of the latest Olympic-related news, a spotlight on a particular topic, and illustrated guides to the history of the Games and this year's venues. It will have an indexed program of events and will provide full results in real time once competition starts July 19. The service may be visited at http://www.sportsreport.com/olympics. It will complement AFP's World SportsReport, a continuously updated compendium of top stories and photos on international sporting events. Both services provide news summaries with hypertext links to full stories and photos, and an a la carte section which allows users to receive their own selection of news by e-mail. Apple, based in Cupertino, Calif., and Excite Inc. of Mountain View, Calif., have announced an agreement under which Excite will take on several Internet roles for Apple. Excite will provide a special Apple edition of Excite's Internet search and directory service for users of Apple's Internet Connection Kit and Apple web site visitors. Excite will also acquire, manage and expand the 5,000 listings contained in Apple's InGuide, which offers in-depth reviews of Internet sites. InGuide is a set of reviews of the top sites on the Web, rated for quality and categorized for age appropriateness. "Adding the InGuide listings is a big plus for Excite," said Jim Bellows, executive editor of Excite. "We've already got over 60,000 concise web-site reviews done by professional journalists, and this new addition gives Excite a real leg-up on the competition." Excite has strategic alliances with America Online Inc., Tribune Media Services and CUC Investments Inc. Excite also has media-related agreements with the LOS ANGELES TIMES, NEWSDAY, Reuters and the Tribune Co. Excite, founded in June 1994, is funded by a combination of corporate investment and venture capital. Investors include Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield and Byers; Institutional Venture Partners; Charles Rivers Ventures, and International Data Group. Imagesetter manufacturer ECRM of Tewksbury, Mass., has joined with Digital Equipment Corp. of Merrimack, N.H., and Harlequin Inc. of Cambridge, Mass., to release ECRM's new NT PostScript-compatible RIP operating on the Digital Alpha platform. It will be available as a complete pre-press solution from ECRM. The new product is based on Harlequin's ScriptWorks 4.0, the newest version of its software interpreter, and will be marketed by ECRM to operate on an Alpha platform with an ECRM ScriptSetter imagesetter. It will be shown on the Alpha PCI 64-275 RIP kernel with an ECRM KnockOut 4550 in the ECRM and Digital booths at NEXPO '96 in Las Vegas. Other ECRM partners who will display the new product at NEXPO include Konica, Anitec and DuPont (Pitman booth). Initially ECRM will be offering two Digital Alpha platforms, the Alpha PCI 33-233, configured for standard speed ECRM ScriptSetters, and the Alpha PCI 64-275 RIP kernel that will be used with all ScriptSetters. Digital platforms will be serviced and supported through DEC's world-wide service system. 4-Sight, a supplier of ISDN pre-press solutions based in West Des Moines, Iowa, has published a guide explaining how ISDN digital delivery can become an integral part of the pre-press workflow. "ISDN in Your Workflow" provides an overview of the issues and benefits of this technology for the pre-press, printing and publishing industries. "ISDN in Your Workflow" explains the technology of ISDN, addresses connectivity issues and explores critical topics such as "Peer to Peer connections vs. creating a WAN" and "Peer to Peer connections vs. the Internet." The document also discusses bandwidth issues by describing the various speeds available. Formally known as the Aquarius project, version 4.0's additional features include retrieval options, such as the ability to allow customers to retrieve files from designated folders at remote sites at their own convenience; customer folders; additional pre-press plug-ins, and accounting logs for customer billing. The POTTSVILLE (Pa.) REPUBLICAN newspaper's New Horizons Group has teamed with Calliope LLC, a software development company founded by students at Duke University, to create Internet publishing solutions for newspapers. Their first product is Info-Connect Web Publisher, which will be introduced at NEXPO '96 in Las Vegas. Web Publisher, a Web publishing and archiving system, generates HTML and publishing templates directly from front-end systems onto World-Wide Web sites. The server couples stored pages with a search engine to provide internal and external access to news archives. Also joining this partnership is Real Media Inc., a New York-based Internet advertising services company which will provide software development support and integration of Adstream, its open-architecture advertising technology already used by more than 60 newspaper Web sites. Seattle-based Pantheon has introduced Pantheon Vision, software that automates the process of producing and delivering news over the Internet. It includes turn-key web pages, content development and access to web server facilities. Pantheon Vision includes a full version of Pantheon Builder, software that automates software coding and data entry, organizing and converting text and photographs from any newsroom's computer system, whether proprietary, Windows or Macintosh. Pantheon Vision provides newspapers with their own custom web page, for which design and updates are provided through an agreement with Free Range Media. Pantheon Vision comes in four sizes, depending on the size of the newspaper and the number of stories involved. Pricing starts at $19,800 for the minimum package. ULTRE, a division of Linotype-Hell based in Melville, N.Y., has signed distribution agreements with TEREM, one of Russia's largest distributors of electronic publishing equipment; and JUAMA, a major pre-press distribution and publishing integration organization based in Mexico. TEREM, which is based in Moscow and has three Russian branches, maintains more than 30 dealers throughout Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States. Fifty employees, primarily engineers, work from the main office. A Mexican family-owned business since 1955, JUAMA employs more than 130 people in its four divisions: SPG (graphic production systems), Altec (high technology), DPI (diagnostic imaging), and Ecological (water purification systems).
