New York-based Associated Press and the National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting are sponsoring one- and two-day seminars on using computers for newsgathering. The seminars are open to AP staff, member newspapers, educators and journalism students. Instructors from AP and NICAR will teach participants to use the Internet, on-line services, spreadsheets and databases to research stories. Emphasis will be on using the new tools to respond to breaking news and to cover daily beats. Participants will learn how to use the Internet to find government bulletin boards and data sources on a beat, solve the access/cost barriers to gathering government information, use data responsibly, choose among commercial on-line services, work with limited time and money, and integrate computer-assisted reporting with traditional newsgathering methods. One- and two-day workshops are planned; the second day of the two-day workshop includes intensive computer instruction. The seminars are scheduled throughout the summer and early fall in selected domestic AP bureaus. For locations, contact the AP's Tori Smith at (212) 621-1720.
