The New York-based news cooperative has announced that AP AdSEND, the AP's digital advertising delivery service, has signed its 300th customer -- Office Depot, an office supply chain of stores headquartered in Delray Beach, Fla. Office Depot said it plans to transmit roughly 50,000 ads per year to promote sales at its 512 stores in North America. Adobe Systems' Acrobat software is incorporated into AP AdSEND so that ads created on a Macintosh or PC are transmitted intact, with all fonts and graphical elements embedded in the file. With AdSEND, black-and-white and color ads can be sent digitally to newspapers within hours or even minutes, depending on the advertiser's need. Advertisers pay only for ads delivered. The AP also has announced it has signed its 200th newspaper member, the FRESNO (Calif.) BEE, as an AP Audiotex client. AP Audiotex services deliver audio recordings of AP news and features by telephone to readers of AP's 1,550 member newspapers. Audiotex options include news, weather forecasts from Accu-Weather Inc. of State College, Pa., sports scores, stock quotes, horoscopes and soap opera digests. The BEE will offer AP StockQuote Hotline-II, allowing readers to call the BEE and receive quotes on more than 9,000 stock issues from the New York, NASDAQ and American exchanges. Major market indicators and reports are updated every 15 minutes. Developed in conjunction with Brite Voice Systems of Wichita, Kan., StockQuote Hotline was launched in July 1984. In 1992, AP introduced StockQuote Hotline-II, adding reports on mutual funds, money markets, government and corporate bonds, admissions and removals. Initially for the Mac OS, the gateway will be compatible with FirstClass servers of any platform. It will allow FirstClass users to send and receive Internet messages, follow Internet mail lists and Usenet newsgroups, and read and reply to messages with attachments adhering to MIME standards. Private mail will be delivered the moment it is received or sent, and will not be blocked by news transmissions. FirstClass system administrators will be able to replicate popular Internet newsgroups within FirstClass conferences. Other features include MIME support for configurable character sets; handling of cross-platform file attachments with full fidelity, and aliasing of user names and mapping of unaliased names. Orders for the FirstClass Gateway will be accepted in late June 1996, when the product is due for release.
