  • BASEVIEW PRODUCTS INC.
    Baseview, a subsidiary of Harris Publishing Systems Corp. based in Ann Arbor, Mich., has upgraded its IQue editorial software with Hot Backup, an option that automatically copies the contents of a newspaper's production database to a separate database on a separate server.

    Should the primary server fail, the switch to the backup is automatic, with only a brief message to users alerting them to the switch without interrupting their work. And, with the backup server, system maintenance can be undertaken at all hours of the day.


  • BINUSCAN INC.
    New York-based binuscan has introduced new features to JobManager, a Quark XPress XTension that automates color image processing.

    New features include automatic update of images on an XPress page after processing by binuscan ColorPro; page-by-page tracking of images awaiting processing; scheduled processing of images; binuscan verif, which determines whether an image has sufficient pixels to be output at the requested resolution, and conversion of RGB images to black and white.

    JobManager sends a specification file of each image placed in an XPress page to ColorPro, which crops the image (and reduces the file size), then completes processing based on user-defined parameters.

    New AdLink purchasers are: WILMINGTON (Del.) NEWS JOURNAL (127k all-day); FORT MYERS (Fla.) NEWS-PRESS (94k morning); LOUISVILLE (Ky.) COURIER-JOURNAL (236k morning); LANSING (Mich.) STATE JOURNAL (70k morning), and GREENSBURG (Pa.) TRIBUNE-REVIEW (62k morning).

    Purchasing the Internet module of AdLink for Real Estate was the POUGHKEEPSIE (N.Y.) JOURNAL (45k morning).

  • GEOSYSTEMS
    GeoSystems, a supplier of mapping products and services based in Lancaster, Pa., has introduced an electronic map atlas from which maps may be taken for use in CD-ROMs and sites on the World-Wide Web.

    More than 2000 detailed maps are stored in GEMS (Global Electronic Map Set) for use "as is" or customization. The core package includes maps of the world, each continent, all 170 nations, each U.S. state and each province of Canada.

    In addition, GEMS offers regional and city maps, and thematic maps by continent of such things as climate zones, vegetation, population density and rainfall.

  • GRAPHIC COMMUNICATIONS ASSOCIATION
    The GCA of Alexandria, Va., has gone on-line at http://www.gca.org with Graphic Communications Today, a site on the World-Wide Web that offers industry news summaries, reports and monographs from GCA forums and studies, promotion of upcoming GCA events and summaries of GCA technical committee meetings.


  • PRINTWARE INC.
    Printware, based in St. Paul, Minn., has installed its 300th model 1440 Platesetter for paper-based printing plates. The system, for sending pages directly to a platemaker, was installed at Liberty Check Printers in Dallas, Texas.

    Printware also has released a new version of its ZAPrip raster image processor. Version 11 offers expanded network support, with protocols for Microsoft Client and NFS networks, in addition to Novell and PhoneNET. Installation also has been made easier, with more automated steps.


  • PUBLISHING PARTNERS INTERNATIONAL
    PPI, of Manchester, N.H., has authorized Digital Equipment Corp. of Merrimack, N.H., to market, support and integrate PPI's Advertising Management System in North America.

    Under the agreement, DEC's multimedia services consulting group will provide sales, support and installation to newspapers which purchase PPI's system, which uses Windows NT servers and Microsoft's SQL relational database.


  • SCENICSOFT INC.
    ScenicSoft, of Everett, Wash., has introduced an integrated PostScript previewer for Preps, a pre-press imposition system for use in Windows and on Macintoshes. With Preps 3.0, users will be able to preview jobs on the screen, zoom in on pages for precise positioning and verify that the fully RIPped image displayed is correct. Preps is priced from $2995 to $6995.


  • SYMANTEC CORP.
    Symantec, based in Cupertino, Calif., has introduced Suitcase 3.0, it font management software product.

    New features of 3.0 include native mode on the Power Macintosh, compatibility with all popular font formats and desktop publishing applications, incorporation of Apple's drag-and-drop features, linking of fonts to applications so fonts are opened automatically when an application is started, and automatically detection and resolution of font conflicts.

    Suitcase 3.0 will sell for $69.95; current users may buy an upgrade for $39.95.
