Without hardly a hint of the Macintosh operating system, Apple has released its newest computer and it runs on IBM's flavor of UNIX. The Cupertino, Calif.-based company introduced the Network Server family yesterday at Seybold Boston. It is a PowerPC-based server that is priced around $11,000 and has a number of features designed specifically for the publishing industry. The storage system in the Network Server 500 and 700 systems are Fast/Wide SCSI-2 and memory can support up to 512 megabytes. The systems include two Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) buses and slots for up to six PCI cards. Many components of the servers are redundant, with easy access for quick replacement: power supplies, disk drives and cooling fans are all "hot-swappable." The storage bays are easy to access and flexible, giving users the ability to install seven 3.5-inch or 5.25-inch half-height drives or three 5.25-inch full-height SCSI devices. Drives from third-party manufacturers such as FWB Inc. and MicroNet Technology Inc. are supported. Apple has licensed IBM's AIX 4.1.4 UNIX operating system to use the in Network Server family. The company said it chose AIX "because many publishing customers current use UNIX-based servers in demanding server environments." The Network Servers support AppleTalk services, allowing the servers to be managed from a remote Macintosh or PowerBook. The company also announced its new line of Mac OS-based Workgroup Servers that provide faster PowerPC performance with expanded flexibility using the PCI bus architecture. The new servers come bundled with one of three software packages tailored to small- and medium-sized businesses, schools and publishing organizations. These solutions provide web publishing, Mac OS-based application services, and high-performance AppleShare file and print services. The new Workgroup Servers 7250/120 and 8550/132 are Apple's first server products to feature the PCI bus, allowing customers to take advantage of a broad range of expansion cards. The servers use the 120 MHz PowerPC 601 processor in the Workgroup Server 7250 and the 132 MHz PowerPC 604 processor in the Workgroup Server 8550. Both run System 7.5.3 which includes Open Transport 1.1 for faster and more reliable networking. The Workgroup Server 6150/66 remains in the product line as Apple's lowest cost Internet server. And the company announced a new World-Wide Web server package, the Apple Internet Server Solution for the World-Wide Web. Apple Internet Server Solution 2.0 couples award-winning software from industry-leading Internet developers with Apple's powerful new Workgroup Servers to provide webmasters with a complete web server for creating multimedia-rich sites. The CD-ROM contains this software: WebSTAR 1.2.5 from StarNine, a Quarterdeck company; PageMill 1.0, from Adobe Systems; RealAudio Server 1.0 from Progressive Networks; NetCloak 2.0 from Maxum Development; Apple's MacDNS domain name server software for the Mac OS; ServerStat 1.0 from Kitchen Sink Software; BBEdit 3.5.2 from Bare Bones Software Inc.; Netscape 2.0 from Netscape Communications Corp.; AppleSearch 1.5.1; Acrobat Pro 2.1 from Adobe Systems; MapServe and WebMap, image map software from CityNet Express and Kelly A.
