(74k morning), has signed contracts with DEC, of Merrimack, N.H., to integrate the replacement of its 13-year-old Atex editorial front-end with an 80-seat DewarView editorial pagination system from Sysdeco Media Group of Bedford, Mass. The decision was based in part on the success of the DEC DewarView installation at the WICHITA (Kan.) EAGLE (115k morning), another Knight-Ridder paper. ECRM, an output device manufacturer based in Tewksbury, Mass., has completed the ISO registration process to ISO 9002-1994 standards. ECRM was awarded ISO 9002-1987 standards certification last year. The standard accredits a company's quality management system for manufacturing, production and installation. The 1994 standards address a company's responsiveness to customer issues as well as quality procedures. The International Organization for Standardization which developed the ISO standards is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies. QMI, a division of the Canadian Standards Association, qualified ECRM again this year. QMI is the leading registrar in North America; its certificates are recognized by 16 international registrars. MonacoMATCH is a system for controlling scanner-to-press color calibration, editing color and improving image quality. The MonacoMATCH system combines the functionality of two new products, MonacoEXPERT and MonacoPRINT, with the new 2.0 releases of Monaco Systems' MonacoCOLOR and MonacoBATCH programs. MonacoMATCH has a list price of $7995; each of its components is available separately. MonacoCOLOR 2.0, the latest version of Monaco's Adobe Photoshop plug-in, provides scanner calibration and automatic global image enhancement. New features include a larger preview window, advances in unsharp masking and support for Color Sync 2.0 and the ICC file format. MonacoCOLOR 2.0 has a list price of $895. MonacoEXPERT is a Photoshop plug-in that gives production users, designers and photo retouchers tools for adjusting or transforming individual colors. MonacoEXPERT allows users to change hues and select the range of the color change. MonacoEXPERT is priced at $895. MonacoCOLOR 2.0 and MonacoEXPERT are complemented by MonacoBATCH 2.0, a batch processing program for production. MonacoBATCH performs global image enhancement, selective color correction and color separation in the background. MonacoBATCH is priced at $1,495. MonacoPRINT introduces a fast way to characterize and calibrate printing presses, proofing systems, color printers, dye sublimation printers, dry toner printers, and film recorders. It provides consistent color from one printer to the next. MonacoPRINT's $4995 price tag includes a DTP51 Auto Scan Colorimeter from X-Rite Inc. of Grandville, Mich. System Integrators of Sacramento, Calif., has announced that the McClatchy Newspaper Corp. has signed a $2 million contract for three classified systems. The systems will be installed at the SACRAMENTO BEE (270k morning), FRESNO BEE (150k morning) and MODESTO BEE (83k morning). All three newspapers will be running SII's multi-tasking client-server classified software for ad capture, zoning and rating. The products will provide the McClatchy papers with the ability to cross-sell advertising into multiple products, including the World-Wide Web. Software products from SII's Professional Services Division will enable the BEEs to automatically duplicate ads including photos, logos and graphics, to the World-Wide Web. Abbreviations will be electronically expanded in the process for enhanced ad presentation on the web. Installations are due to begin shortly. T/ONE of Quincy, Mass., has announced three recent sales: -- The international relief agency World Vision has selected the Merlin Archive System from T/ONE as its solution for sharing its sizable image archive with sister offices around the globe. Seattle-based World Vision uses historical images for fund raising and promotion. Over its 45-year history, World Vision has accumulated some 600,000 images. These images, in the form of negatives or slides, had been manually filed on shelves, making it difficult for people in different offices to know what was available. Sometimes sister offices even sent photographers to remake photos. Merlin replaces the manual filing system and lets people log on and browse from World Vision's headquarters and, eventually, other sites around the world. World Vision is an international relief and development agency that helps the world's poor by meeting their immediate needs and equipping them to meet their own future needs. In 1995, World Vision helped almost 50 million people through more than 4,800 projects in 101 countries. -- The CHICAGO SUN-TIMES (550k morning) has selected the T/ONE TRAX and Merlin Archive systems to control its digital photo work flow, from assignment to archive. Editors and/or reporters enter photo assignment requests into TRAX, photo editors assign photographers from the schedules maintained by TRAX, and then print out assignment sheets for photographers. Photographers scan in their images (using an application such as Adobe Photoshop), and enter the assignment and caption information into the TRAX record. TRAX then updates the IPTC header and caption of the appropriate image with the information from TRAX and sends the image with full IPTC header to Merlin. Anyone using a Windows-based PC or an Apple Macintosh on the newspaper's network now has access to the photos from the moment they are scanned. The paper is archiving both wire and local photos, as well as handouts. -- The TRI-CITY HERALD (40k morning) of Tri-Cities, Wash., has selected Merlin in its move to digital production. The paper purchased a dual-Pentium Merlin Archive server, a 12 gigabyte RAID array (for an estimated two years' storage), and three user seats, as well as T/ONE's RoboWRAP! scripted image routing and format conversion application. The TRI-CITY HERALD is a McClatchy newspaper located in southeast Washington, about 150 miles south of Spokane. United Media of New York is offering a turnkey service called UMNet to enable newspapers to create their own sites on the World Wide Web.
