  • CYBERGRAPHIC INC.
Queensland Newspapers of Brisbane, Australia, publishers of the COURIER MAIL (218k daily) and the SUNDAY MAIL (591k tabloid), have signed a multimillion-dollar contract for a 200-seat Cybergraphic Genesis II editorial and full-page pagination system.

The two papers, owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Ltd., also turned to Cybergraphic, which is based in the United States in Burlington, Mass., for an upgrade of the existing 120-seat Cybergraphic classified system.

Of the 200 editorial workstations, 110 will have full editorial pagination capabilities. All workstations will be served by two Alpha 2100 fileservers from Digital Equipment Corp., each equipped with two processor boards each. The architecture is known as Symmetrical Multi Processing. The system will have 30Gbyte of live storage space.

The network, designed by Cybergraphic, is built around a fiber optic backbone and includes five remote sites with reporter and classified capabilities. Output will be to APS 3850s which support custom hole punching.

Queensland Newspapers will be the first site to run with Cybergraphic's new Intelligent Wire Filtering software called WOLF, which uses the InText text search engine found in Internet search applications. WOLF allows a user to subscribe to special filters which use artificial intelligence to automatically create an extract of all stories that match the filtering criteria.

The Cybergraphic system will be integrated to News Ltd.'s Image CopyFlow Management and Library system, which was developed at News Ltd.'s head office in Sydney.
