  • AGFA
The Agfa Division of Bayer of Ridgefield Park, N.J., and the Hewlett-Packard Co. of Atlanta have announced the bundling of Agfa's FotoTune Color Management software with HP's DesignJet 755CM large-format color inkjet printer.

The $12,000 DesignJet 75SCM printer can produce full-color, poster-size designs and presentations swiftly in sizes from 8.5 x 11 inches up to 3 x 9 feet. The cost per copy averages $10. The plug-and-play device comes equipped with an Adobe PostScript Level 2 raster image processor; an HP JetDirect card for connection to a Macintosh, PC or network, and 68 megabytes of RAM.

The Agfa FotoTune Color Management software matches color throughout the pre-press and printing process. With FotoTune, even novices are able to match colors from input (scanner, PhotoCD, digital camera) to output (printer, proofer, imagesetter, film recorder). For printing professionals, the software provides the high-end color technology they need, including soft and hard proofing.

In other Agfa product news, the company announced that its AgEa CristalRaster Technology, which features stochastic screening technology for PostScript jobs, has been released for the AccuSet imagesetter family.

The AccuSet implementation uses a 28 micron dot at 1800 dpi and a 31 micron dot at 2400 dpi, and is especially suited for applications using newsprint, uncoated and recycled stock, and coldset web offset printing. Agfa CristalRaster technology for AccuSet provides three pre-compensated screen sets for each micro dot size (28 and 31) and platemaking process (negative, positive), covering a broad range of press gain characteristics.

  • 4-SIGHT L.C.
4-Sight, of West Des Moines, Iowa, has enhanced version 3.0 of its ISDN digital delivery solution, iSDN Manager. One new feature will enable 4-Sight users to gain instant access to the Internet; a second provides a remote proofing system.

Users of 4-Sight iSDN Manager will be able to access the Internet over ISDN using 4-Sight PPP. The software will be supplied with an Internet browsing application as well as MacTCP, so starting up will require only an ISDN account set up with a local provider.

The 4-Sight QuickProof product was created to allow simultaneous on-screen proofing of a job at two locations. With 4-Sight iSDN Manager installed at agency and client sites, a document can be simultaneously viewed by both parties using an ISDN line for high-speed communications. The agency dials up the client, and screen-shares the document with the client site.

The client then has the ability to "mark up" the document by "drawing" with the mouse on the screen to illustrate any design changes that need to be made. The agency can then make those changes which are instantly transmitted to the client, refreshing the screen for verification.
