The output device manufacturer based in Thousand Oaks, Calif., made three announcements recently: -- Autologic has become an authorized reseller of Ethernet switches and 100Base-T repeater and adapter products from Grand Junction Networks Inc. of Fremont, Calif. Grand Junction makes high-performance networks for color publishing; the agreement gives Autologic high-speed LAN solutions. -- Autologic has released software upgrades for its APS-100 Graphics Integrators and APS-200 Graphics Integrators and OPI Servers. Among the enhancements: support of larger file systems and DCS 2.0; faster networks; an improved graphical user interface, and support for color TIF files and JPEG compression. -- Six orders have been filled for the APS-Platemaster, a computer-to-plate imagesetter. Commercial printers buying the output device were Colorimmetry of Illinois, American Trucker of Indiana, Publisher's Press of Kentucky, Hutchinson Co. of Pennsylvania, Quebecor Printing of Tennessee and Horticultural Printers Inc. of Texas. Apple has announced new plug-ins that link its ColorSync 2.0 to Adobe Photoshop. Apple developed ColorSync to provide an industry-standard method for interpreting and reproducing the capabilities of color devices, such as displays, scanners and printers, so that users could achieve consistent results when using different devices. Apple, based in Cupertino, Calif., said Macintosh users of Adobe's image-editing application for desktop publishing, and users of applications that support the Photoshop plug-in architecture, now will be better able to use the color management capabilities of Apple's ColorSync 2.0. The plug-ins ensure predictable color throughout the prepress process by giving users access to ColorSync 2.0 within Photoshop by acquiring and exporting images to and from different device color spaces. ColorSync 2.0 will also plug into the Filter menu, making the monitor display a more accurate representation of the original image. The plug-ins -- which support RGB and CMYK separations, and the TIF format -- are available free of charge to end-users via AppleLink, eWorld and Apple's Mac OS home page http://www.austin.apple.com/macos. The plug-ins are also available to developers for licensing. The plug-ins are compatible with Photoshop 2.5.1 and later, and work on both Macintosh and Power Macintosh systems. Computer Associates International Inc. of Islandia, N.Y., and Dataware Technologies of Cambridge, Mass., have announced a joint marketing agreement to license Total Recall for BRS/Search and CA-OpenIngres, Computer Associates' client/server database solution. The agreement provides customers of both companies with a way to access structured and unstructured information through one interface, combining the strengths of full-text and relational database technologies. Total Recall is a specialized application programming interface which allows an RDBMS and 4GL to link with Dataware Technologies management system, BRS/Search. Nearly 100 Total Recall applications have been installed worldwide, including systems for document management, regulatory compliance, news/photo archives for newspapers, litigation support for law firms and corporate counsel, and intelligence systems for government agencies and corporations. Total Recall customers include Amdahl, Andersen Consulting, British Gas, Data General, Eastern Electricity, Ford Motor Company, and the Ohio Education Association. Tandem Computers Inc. of Cupertino, Calif., and DPS Typecraft Limited, a supplier of turnkey client/server publishing systems, have entered into a nonexclusive joint marketing agreement to serve newspapers and magazines in the United Kingdom. DPS Typecraft, based in Basildon, England, supplies and integrates publishing software from Digital Technology International of Orem, Utah, to many of the U.K.'s newspaper groups. The agreement with DPS Typecraft will give Tandem an entry into provincial newspapers that already are DPS Typecraft customers, as well as providing an open systems software upgrade path for users of older, proprietary systems from System Integrators Inc. of Sacramento, Calif. DPS Typecraft also announced the sale of a L2.6 million pre-press system to the BIRMINGHAM POST AND MAIL, which is based on DT database technology operating on dual Tandem UNIX database servers. The installation encompasses 380 networked Macintosh users in advertising and editorial, including the House of Commons for the group's parliamentary and lobby correspondents.
