  • ASSOCIATED PRESS
    New York-based AP has introduced a Macintosh driver for AP's digital camera, NewsCamera 2000.

    The driver, designed by Eastman Kodak, makes downloading as much as five times faster than other methods by identifying the type of CPU in the receiving machine and streamlining the acquisition process based on that processor.

    The driver, which works with both Power Macs and older 68000 Motorola processors, is compatible with other Kodak digital cameras and Canon's EOS*DCS 3c.

    Owners of current model Kodak digital cameras may download the driver through the Kodak forum (GO KODAK) on CompuServe.

    The AP also has announced a dealership agreement with Toltech Systems of Mexico to resell AP's phototechnology products.


  • GEOSYSTEMS
    Intuitive searching of maps on the World-Wide Web is one goal of a new alliance formed by Lancaster, Pa.-based GeoSystems with DimensionX, a pioneer in advanced software applications for Web.

    By developing commercial Web applications for interactive mapping that use GeoSystems' Java-based technology, the two companies hope to assure easy access to the maps and travel information GeoSystems now makes available to such clients as Ameritech and the National Geographic Society.     DimensionX is a provider of turnkey Web sites for such clients as Fox, AT&T and Sun Microsystems. Its Java technology livens up static Web pages by allowing programs to be executed with a Web browser. DimensionX's Web address is: http://www.dimensionx.com

    This new division of DataTimes Corp., based in Arlington, Va., offers to deliver tailored news packages to subscribers automatically.

    Intell.X will use information analysis technology to continuously scan thousands of publications, broadcast transcriptions, financial databases and government records to build news packages that will be relayed to users via a corporate network or e-mail service throughout the business day.

  • JOHN JULIANO COMPUTER SERVICES CO.
    JJCS of Decatur, Ga., has released Atan HTML2, the newest member of the EXPRESSWAY family of software bridges.

    Atan HTML2 executes markup and formats in the format used by front-end systems from Atex Publishing Systems Corp. and translates the markup into HTML (HyperText Markup Language), the language of the World-Wide Web.

    Current Atan EXPRESS users may download a demo copy from the JJCS Web site but first must call for a password.


  • MONOTYPE SYSTEMS INC.
    Monotype, of Rolling Meadows, Ill., has introduced Power Link, a production database that provides data management and control tools on multiple platforms.

    PowerLink uses a Sybase database manager to track and report the status of production elements in assembling a newspaper. PowerLink users can check all elements -- text, graphics, photos, ads -- on a given page to learn their progress in the production process.

    Monotype claimed PowerLink "virtually eliminates oversights such as running the wrong version of an ad." In addition, after publication elements can be stored in an archive with the PowerLink database storing that information for future reference and possible recall.


  • PACIFIC COAST SOFTWARE
    Pacific Coast Software of San Diego has announced several new products:

    -- Web Commerce Solution is a Macintosh-based program that allows users to publish catalogs and databases with instant world-wide access at a fraction of the cost of traditional printing. It provides completely automated order tracking, payment verification, and electronic delivery of products.

    Web Commerce Solution combines two products that may be used individually or jointly. The first, WebCatalog, provides a bridge between an existing catalog or database and the World-Wide Web, including an extensive keyword matching algorithm that searches for and ranks entries in a fast and sophisticated format.

    The second, WebMerchant, is a user-friendly tool designed to simplify the process of shopping directly from a Web site. Based on a "shopping cart" model, WebMerchant enables on-line shoppers to choose and place selected products in a "virtual shopping cart," pay for them using a variety of secure methods, and receive appropriate products via e-mail.

    WebMerchant users can access on-line banking such as First Virtual, as well as encrypted credit card number transmission so all financial transactions can be handled securely, while on-line.

    -- Graphics On Call is a fully automated catalog of stock photographs and graphic images available to users on the Internet. Residing on Pacific Coast Software's World Wide Web server, Graphics On Call enables graphics users to locate, preview and purchase individual images of professional stock photography and graphics without having to buy any one collection. Browsing is free of charge; images are purchased individually, and delivered immediately via e-mail.


  • SYNAPTIC MICRO SOLUTIONS
    Classified ads may be output to World-Wide Web pages easily from Synaptic's SunType Classified System using a new output option that generates HTML markup. Appleton, Wis.-based Synaptic says its driver includes such features as automatic inclusion of display ad and logo graphics.

  • VU/TEXT LIBRARY SERVICES
    VU/TEXT Library Services of Philadelphia, part of Knight-Ridder Information Inc., has released SAVEgateway, the newest member of the SAVE family of products.

    SAVEgateway enables users on another service to easily access the archived files stored on a SAVE library system, often an in-house system at a newspaper.

    In August, two gateways opened to the public. SAVEgateway:AOL was developed for America Online and now offers access to the CHICAGO TRIBUNE's news stories stored on SAVE and archived back to January, 1985.

    SAVEgateway: WEB enables users on the Internet to search the archived files of the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS dating back to June, 1985.

    The SAVEgateway application can be customized to interpret and pass on various protocols so that a SAVE archive can be accessed by AOL, Web and other interface users at the same time. For example, an America Online user can transparently use AOL's own interface to search the CHICAGO TRIBUNE archives.

    In addition to the CHICAGO TRIBUNE, the ORLANDO SENTINEL and the Phoenix Newspapers plan to use the AOL gateway.


  • WORLD-WIDE POWER CO.
    Arvada, Colo.-base World-Wide Power Co. is a new enterprise devoted to distributing items such as Quark XPress XTensions, add-ons and plug-ins through a site on the World-Wide Web.

    A 24-hour bulletin board system based will allow users to download demos or full versions of products and pay by credit card, or have access to a technical support staff. Users calling to order software will be able to speak with an experienced user, not a telemarketer.
