GMTI of Cincinnati is now the exclusive North American distributor of products developed jointly with Digital Collections of Hamburg, Germany. The principal product now available is PaperDesk, an integrated text and picture/graphic work flow management and archiving system being used by 11 Gannett Co. newspapers. Chemical-free processing is now possible with GEO FILM 1000 from Graphic Enterprises of North Canton, Ohio. Designed for use in the PRO SETTER 1000 and NEG SETTER 1000 imagesetters from Graphic Enterprises, the silverless medium can carry text, line art and halftones with a resolution rivaling conventional film output. Both imaging devices use dry toner; GEO FILM 1000 is polyester based. Start 2 Finish Publishing Inc. and the Michigan Press Photographers Association has finished the latest Pictures of the Year CD-ROM for 1994, and 17,000 of them are being distributed free of charge to members of the media. Monotype Typography of Chicago, the company that produced the core fonts in Windows 95, is a participant in the launch of the Microsoft Network on-line service, a fee-based option for Microsoft Windows 95 users. Through MSN, Monotype customers will be able to communicate with Monotype sales and technical support staff through a bulletin board. A forum will permit product-related questions to be asked and answered on-line. A chat room will be set up to host weekly 90-minute sessions moderated by the forum's manager. The Monotype file library will feature downloadable data such as news releases, font histories and graphic previews of new font releases. On start-up, Monotype FunFonts 3 in TrueType format will be offered at a special price of $19.99. Thirteen Monotype TrueType fonts are included as core fonts in Windows 95. The fonts -- Arial, Times New Roman, Courier and Symbol -- support Central and Eastern European languages, as well as Turkish, Greek, and Cyrillic alphabets. Additional non-Latin fonts are in production. A provider of information and curriculum products for schools and research centers, New Canaan, Conn.-based NewsBank has enhanced CDJr., its current events CD-ROM intended for use in middle schools. Updated quarterly, CDJr. now has a unified database so that searches will encompass articles from more than 100 U.S. newspapers, international and domestic wire services, and 30 magazines. A new, third search level, Easy Topic Search, allows users to view a list of research topics and retrieve related articles. Scitex, bidding to position itself as "the leader in visual information communication," has introduced a number of products recently. The company, based in Bedford, Mass., now offers: -- SPONTANE, a short-run, on-demand duplex color printer developed in concert with Xerox Corp. which can produce up to 40 full-color pages a minute. -- Dolev 4press, an internal-drum imagesetter tailored for commercial printing. -- Scitex Ripro Archiver, a data management system. -- The Smart 342L high-productivity flatbed scanner which can handle more than 18 scans an hour. -- The Smart 730 Plus robotic scanner for large-volume, high-throughput scanning. The 730's robotic loader can handle up to 120 images, with throughput of 20 scans an hour. -- Iris Realist 5015 and 5030 color-proof inkjet printers. -- A complete computer-to-plate imaging system, which includes the new DoPlate 800 platesetter and Improof 650C proofer. The publisher of the ERIE (Pa.) MORNING NEWS, ERIE DAILY TIMES and SUNDAY TIMES-NEWS has expanded its computer bulletin board service, Times-News Access, to 24 hours a day over eight phone lines with 14.4 bps modems. Under a strategic partnership with Archetype Inc. of Waltham, Mass., Palo Alto, Calif.-based Torque will publish and distribute the Silicon Graphics version of Archetype's InterSep OPI, which replaces low-resolution image files with hi-res files on output. Torque manufactures RipServer, for accelerating PostScript rasterizing, and FITServer, for speeding up the Live Picture image-editing application. Chicago-based TMS has announced that beginning Jan. 1, 1996, its Knight-Ridder/Tribune Graphics Network will begin creating all its graphics in Adobe Illustrator 5.5 for the Macintosh. Until then, graphics will continue to be created in Macromedia Freehand 3.1. TMS also has become a supplier of on-line newsletters under a contract with America Online Inc. of Vienna, Va. TMS's Custom Interactive Services unit will produce weekly and semi-weekly newsletters for AOL's major areas. The newsletters will appear as on-line forums, complete with photos and graphics. Xinet, a developer of UNIX to Macintosh connectivity products based in Berkeley, Calif., has introduced performance enhancements for its AppleShare file servers for UNIX hosts. Coupled with Apple's AppleShare Workstation 3.6 software, the enhancements to K-AShare and FullPress cut file transfer times initiated in the Mac finder by 40 percent. K-AShare is an AFP-compatible file server for UNIX hosts, enabling a UNIX host to act as an AppleShare file server. FullPress is an Open Prepress Interface server which now is available for Sun SPARCstations running Solaris 2.2 and later. Grandville, Mich.-based X-Rite has introduced three products: -- The ATS Series of auto-tracking spectrophotometers, providing improved control over difficult, non-process color jobs including pastels, reflex blue, dark reds and corporate logos. The ATS Series is a 31-band 45/0 spectrophotometer capable of scanning the full 400-700 nanometer spectral range. -- The Scanner Enhancer, software which sets color controls based on each peripheral's unique characteristics. For example, after scanning a supplied test image, users select a pre-measured data file and save the calculated correction.
