Belgium's VUM Newspaper Group has announced that it has signed a contract for CCI NewsDesk BaseLine Release 6 and CCI AdDesk Release 2 for DE STANDAARD (80k), HET NIEUWSBLAD (200k), DE GENTENAAR (25k) and HET VOLK (100k), the group's four main publications. CCI NewsDesk BaseLine is a standardized editorial system which uses a "best practices" editorial workflow to streamline the editorial process. The system allows for customization of its predefined workflow and pre-configured system integration. VUM will also implement a CCI AdDesk Production System to replace its existing DDE ad production system. VUM will implement the CCI NewsDesk BaseLine System for nearly 300 editorial users before it proceeds with the installation of CCI AdDesk Production for more than 25 advertising staff. Jaws PDF Editor has been developed to meet the demand for an application that combines the most popular document editing tools with a familiar office document environment and can be used as a stand-alone tool or as a companion to Jaws PDF Creator, Global Graphics' PDF creation package. Jaws PDF Editor gives users the ability to view, search, manipulate, comment on, mark up and print PDF documents with a reduced user learning curve. Jaws PDF Creator retails for $50 (Euro 55/UK £35). The company has introduced Version 2.0 of Electronic Tear Sheet Server, a password-secure, web-based tool that allows advertisers to see what their published ads look like in the newspaper each day. New features in version 2.0 include thumbnail gallery views of tearsheets; line-item links from an invoice to the tearsheet with the billed ad; increased advertising agency capabilities; configurable metadata displayed with the ad in the thumbnail gallery; increased functionality for serving multiple file formats of tearsheets; pop-up views of pages surrounding tear sheets; a measuring tool for on-line verification of ad size, and increased search capabilities. The company said it has also introduced Internet Proofing System (IPS) 4.6, a secure, web-based proofing system that creates a collaborative proofing environment where the newspaper's staff can work with clients and design agencies. The ARIZONA REPUBLIC (496k) of Phoenix has agreed to purchase ProImage's NewsWay digital workflow system. The installation will include software for job planning, production scheduling, workflow automation, management information, page pairing, raster imposition, soft proofing, intelligent output management, job tracking, automatic generation of ink set-up information, page and flat transmission, messaging and communications. At the REPUBLIC, NewsWay will balance the production load between Harlequin RIPs and Autologic (now Agfa) 3850 recorders as well as output to the publisherÕs SeeColor color proofing systems driving HPÕs 1050 inkjet printers. The company also announced a strategic alliance with GEI Prepress (GEI), a division of Graphic Enterprises of North Canton, Ohio. The agreement includes the provision for each to market the otherÕs products. GEI specializes in software development and the sale and support of OPI, workflow, copydot scanning and proofing solutions for the newspaper and related industries. (LNP) -- publishers of the INTELLIGENCER JOURNAL (45k) and the LANCASTER NEW ERA (45k) -- has signed a contract to purchase the SCOOP editorial system from SCS. LNP will have a 120-seat SCOOP system with 70 reporter/editor workstations and 50 editor/paginator workstations. The SCOOP installation will run on dual Dell 6600 servers with a Windows 2000 platform and a terabyte of storage. For archiving and digital asset management, LNP will use dual Dell 2550 servers with two PowerVault units. Both the editorial system and the archiving and asset management system will be backed up by co-standby server. The paper will have a SCOOP configuration that uses Adobe InDesign. LNP is also purchasing SCOOP SQL Archive and the full line of Fotoware modules for digital asset management. SCOOP Ad will manage ad placement. For wire handling, LNP is purchasing third-party software from QuickWire Labs of Hamilton, Ontario. At LNP, SCOOP will interface with SCS's Layout-8000 display ad dummying system and with an XPance ad tracking system. The company also said the weekly DETROIT JEWISH NEWS (19k) has installed SCS's AdMAX/Classified for classified advertising management and SCS/ClassPag for classified pagination. The JEWISH NEWS has an unusual style for classified display ads: they are flowed like liners within classification. Single-column ads are paired and aligned under multi-column ones.
