  • ALFAQUEST TECHNOLOGIES INC.
    The DALLAS MORNING NEWS (500k) has installed the company's PrintExpress Consolidated Production Management (CPM) server to replace its existing NT based distributed output management equipment. The PrintExpress configuration encompasses three facilities -- the Dallas host location, the Plano, Texas, print location and the DFW-area disaster recovery location.

    The MORNING NEWS has configured two Sun Enterprise 420 servers at its home office, driving computer-to-plate (CTP) and film imagers at its Plano printing site, as well as over 30 network proofing devices at various locations.

  • ATEX MEDIA COMMAND
    EL UNIVERSAL DE MEXICO (150k) has purchased and started to install, in Spanish, Media Command's Circulation Command and Sales Command advertising systems.

    Sales Command will be interfaced to EL UNIVERSAL's Oracle financial system, replacing a Harris classified system. The Sales Command system includes more than 60 Cyber$ell and five CyberCla$$Page workstations.

  • CAREERBUILDER
    The on-line recruitment enterprise has announced that it will launch local career centers on sites operated by CitySearch, a unit of Ticketmaster of Los Angeles. Under the agreement, Citysearch will begin carrying job postings in June, giving seven million unique users access to more than 300,000 listings.

    The McClatchy Co. has agreed to use CareerSite for its on-line recruitment system at all 11 daily and 13 community newspapers it owns.

    Papers such as Minneapolis' STAR TRIBUNE (400k), the NEWS & OBSERVER (180k) of Raleigh, N.C., and the SACRAMENTO BEE (286k) will be able to offer employment advertisers a "one-stop" e-recruiting system and provide job seekers a confidential career service that focuses on local employers within a national recruitment network.

  • COPYRIGHT CLEARANCE CENTER INC.
    MSNBC.com, the Internet news site, and Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), the licensing agent for text reproduction rights, have announced that Rightslink, CCC's digital rights management solution, is live on MSNBC.com.

    MSNBC.com will use Rightslink to instantly license digital content, such as interactive links and original news articles, directly to customers. An interactive link is a multimedia package placed on the licensee's web site; a visitor can use the link to receive a news presentation that combines audio, video and text on a particular topic. For example, the MSNBC interactive "On the Front Lines" shows deployments of troops in the Middle East against a map of the region.

    Rightslink, CCC's digital rights management solution, licenses and delivers on-line content electronically to users. By clicking on a link located near a news item on MSNBC.com, customers can obtain instant permission to reuse that content in print and digital formats.

  • DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY INTERNATIONAL
    DER REPORTER (39k), a weekly newspaper located in Neustadt, Germany, has upgraded its existing NewsSpeed editorial and AdSpeed advertising systems to their latest versions. DER REPORTER also plans to unify web publishing with the main production system by installing DTI's PageSpeed Web Publisher and ClassSpeed Web Order Entry software. The project is scheduled to begin in August.

    DER REPORTER will upgrade to AdSpeed 5, which uses Adobe InDesign and an extensive ad production database. AdProof, a plug-in to AdSpeed, will allow advertisers to proof their ads over the Internet. The paper will also upgrade to NewsSpeed 5, which will bring the design tools of InDesign into a multi-user production database. SpeedWriter integrates the text editing capabilities of Adobe InCopy.

  • GROUP LOGIC INC.
    This Arlington, Va.-based supplier of Macintosh-to-Windows interoperability software has announced the release of Version 2.1 of the its ExtremeZ-IP file and print server product. ExtremeZ-IP uses the TCP/IP protocol to increase throughput between Macintosh clients and Microsoft Windows servers.

    Version 2.1 of ExtremeZ-IP gives administrators additional control and system status information, including detailed information and control over users, files, volumes, print queues and individual print jobs under management. The product also offers performance gains from directory index optimizations, improved support for the Service Location Protocol, better support for LPR printers, and an enhanced Windows Explorer plug-in for managing Macintosh file permissions. Version 2.1 of ExtremeZ-IP is a free upgrade to existing customers with maintenance agreements.

    The company also said that it had released Version 3.1 of Imagexpo, its softproofing system. With Imagexpo, printers and other graphics professionals transmit digital "softproofs" over the Internet to their clients. Reviewers annotate images with comments, then return the marked up proofs.

  • MACTIVE INC.
    Nebraska's OMAHA WORLD-HERALD (200k) has contracted for an AdBase system, which will include 74 workstations for classified and retail ad input, classified pagination, pre-prints and accounts receivable.

    The paper will also be using Mactive's Nomadic Client software to exchange information between AdBase and a remote client, as well as AdLink for ad production management. The system includes interfaces to PPI, Burt packaging system, a credit card clearinghouse and Faxmaker.

    The company also said Capital-Gazette Newspapers of Annapolis, Md., has purchased a 36-workstation AdBase system for classified ad input, classified pagination and accounts receivable. The paper will use Microsoft Windows 2000 clients and Sun Microsystems (UNIX) servers with an Oracle database.

    Capital-Gazette Newspapers publishes six newspapers and one magazine with a total circulation of about 300,000, including THE CAPITAL (50k), a daily newspaper serving the Annapolis area.

  • NET-LINX PUBLISHING SOLUTIONS INC.
    Singapore Press Holdings has moved its operations from its old Times House and News Centre offices in Singapore into new offices in Toa Payoh North. Net-Linx handled the move of the company's multiple Compaq NonStop ServerNet systems.

    Singapore Press Holdings also purchased two additional Compaq NonStop ServerNet systems to extend its server farm and provide for a disaster recovery system at the print plant on the outskirts of the city. The project started in October 2001 by upgrading all existing systems to the same baseline and operating system level. The library system was also consolidated into one of the latest Compaq NonStop Servernet configurations.

  • NEWSSTAND INC.
    Florida's TAMPA TRIBUNE (200k) has selected NewsStand of Austin, Texas, to distribute its editions on-line using the NewsStand distribution system and reader. The TRIBUNE said a seven-day subscription through NewsStand will cost $1.75.

    The TRIBUNE joins the NEW YORK TIMES, DAILY DEAL, Canada's GLOBE AND MAIL, and a half-dozen overseas publications in using the service. Distribution via NewsStand counts as paid circulation under rules used by the Audit Bureau of Circulations of Schaumburg, Ill.

  • NOOSH INC.
    The STAR TRIBUNE (400k) of Minneapolis has chosen Noosh to help manage its interactive media, direct mail and marketing materials.

    The first phase of the deployment will focus on the requirements of the STAR TRIBUNE's direct marketing and interactive media services. Noosh will help automate the workflow of the entire ad lifecycle, from initial order to scheduling and placement. STAR TRIBUNE managers will rely on Noosh reporting tools to identify workflow bottlenecks and establish benchmarks for improvement.

    The second phase of the deployment will concentrate on print services that the STAR TRIBUNE provides to its customers. To date, more than 100 STAR TRIBUNE personnel and 25 suppliers have been trained to use Noosh.

    THE ITEM (21k), an evening newspaper published in Sumter, S.C., has purchased the complete SAXoPRESS Content Management System and the complete Publicus Online Publishing System to help produce both the print and on-line editions of its publications.

    The print and on-line employees of THE ITEM and THE MESSENGER (a semi-weekly publication in Hartsville, S.C.) will use one 30-workstation SAXoPRESS system to write, edit and produce all of its print and on-line products. The Publicus system will help automate the production of the company's two web sites. SAXoPRESS and Publicus will be integrated with THE ITEM's Mactive AdBase system.

    The Item's SAXoPRESS system will be a mixed Mac OS and Windows 2000 solution. It will be staged on Windows 2000 servers running an Oracle8i database, with a mix of Mac OS and Windows 2000 reporting, editing and pagination workstations.

    THE ITEM's Publicus system will be hosted and managed by SAXoTECH at its North American data center in Reston, Va.

  • SOFTWARE CONSULTING SERVICES LLC
    Times Community Newspapers of Leesburg, Va., a group of Northern Virginia weekly newspapers with a combined circulation of 262,255, recently installed the SCS/ClassPag classified pagination system. The papers produce approximately 100 pages of classifieds per week. Less than one week after installation began, Times Community Newspapers was fully paginating classifieds with SCS/ClassPag.

    The primary SCS/ClassPag server is a Hewlett-Packard tc2100 server running Linux; an IBM e-Server provides backup. Using Linux facilitates file sharing among Times Community Newspapers's PC and Macintosh workstations.

    At Times Community Newspapers, SCS/ClassPag accepts ads from a Unisys/PPI order entry system where agate ads are built using Microsoft Word and classified display ads are built in QuarkXPress.
