Cambridge Newspapers Ltd. -- the United Kingdom publisher of the CAMBRIDGE EVENING NEWS (40k) and 10 weekly titles with a combined circulation of 240,000 -- has signed a contract with Atex to install a Prestige editorial system for content management, pagination and web output. The 82-seat installation completes a multimillion-pound modernization program for Cambridge Newspapers. The project began 10 years ago with construction of a new printing facility and has included new advertising and pagination systems. This Ann Arbor, Mich.-based company said that it would release the latest version of its ProductionManagerPro sometime this spring. New in ProductionManagerPro is compatibility with Creator 6 for ad-building from MultiAd Inc. of Peoria, Ill. ProductionManagerPro also works with Quark XPress (including support for Quark 5), InDesign 1.5, MultiAd Creator and MultiAd Creator 2. Also new to version 1.7 of ProductionManagerPro is a Find Elements command. This feature allows the production staff to search for elements (graphics, logos, fonts) based on criteria such as file name, date created, date modified, size, file type, creator and keywords. As with previous versions, the new version of ProductionManagerPro is designed to work with OS 8 and 9. The software is currently in the beta testing stage. The GLOBE AND MAIL (370), a Canadian national newspaper based in Toronto, has signed a contract for CCI NewsDesk Release 6. the paper is a subsidiary of Bell Globemedia Publishing Inc., a multimedia company with broadcast, print and web outlets. With the purchase of CCI NewsDesk Release 6 the company hopes to start maximizing the use of content across all its outlets. The maker of CCDot has announced that it has two additional modules for its dot meter product line. The new modules include the ability to accurately read Frequency Modulation (FM) screening and to read ink weight -- taking the CCDot into the pressroom. Centurfax's CCDot DotMeter is a quality control device for printing that measures halftone dots on film and on offset-litho plates, aiding in the calibration of imagesetters and platesetters. The Centurfax FlexoDot provides similar features for flexographic printing plates. A dot meter combines digital camera and scanner technology with a microscope. The camera takes a snapshot of the area being measured and the system scans the pixels on the image. Rather than taking an average of dot density (as with a densitometer), a dot meter is measuring image area and providing an absolute value of dot coverage. Jaws PDF Courier links companies directly with print centers and other service providers for the efficient and secure submission of "ready-to-print" jobs over the Internet. The product is an encrypted client/server document delivery system that enables print service centers (copyshop, commercial and corporate) to create customized specifications for creating files in the Portable Document Format (PDF) and output, and to distribute the software as a complete "own brand" PDF workflow package to their clients. Clients are able to easily create, preview and submit any document, created in any application, direct from the desktop to designated print centers in an automated PDF workflow. Licensing for Jaws PDF Courier consists of a single charge for the server software and various client software license packages. Technically, the platform processes editorial feeds from Knight Ridder's daily newspapers, converts them into XML format, provides database tools for web site managers and newsrooms, and re-distributes content through e-mail, wireless and other channels. Market Leader is based on Knight Ridder Digital's COFAX web-publishing technology. The platform runs on BEA Weblogic application servers and Oracle databases, and uses Knight Ridder Digital's award-winning XMULTRA solution.
