Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Baseview has announced AdManagerPro 4.0, which it says "has been rewritten from the ground up, using input from more than 1200 customers, yet still retaining the most popular features of previous versions." Version 4.0's new features include connecting to SQL databases via TCP/IP; database neutrality; many built-in reports, plus compatibility with third-party report generators such as Crystal Reports; streamlined transient ad entry; assignment of multiple accounts and multiple contacts to a single customer (such as a real estate agency); support for rate-based and adjustment-based contracts with exclusions based on ad types and adjustments; support for color contracts; less restrictive file-locking; storage of all ads at the insertion level, and many others. Ohio's CINCINNATI ENQUIRER (194k) has announced that is has signed a contract for a CCI NewsDesk BaseLine system. The ENQUIRER will become the first installation in the United States to utilize CCI NewsDesk BaseLine. A standardized editorial system, CCI NewsDesk BaseLine uses the notion of "best practices" in editorial workflow to streamline the editorial process from story creation to final publication both on-line and in print. The system allows for a number of customization options even though it is primarily based on a predefined workflow and pre-configured system integration. The Gannett Co. Inc., owner of the ENQUIRER, will also install CCI NewsDesk BaseLine Release 6 at the CINCINNATI POST, a 50,000-circulation evening daily owned by E.W. Scripps Co. of Cincinnati, which is in a host-tenant joint operating agreement with the ENQUIRER. CCI Europe, which has U.S. offices in Kennesaw, Ga., is on the Web at http://www.ccieurope.com/. The 24 newspapers of the community newspaper division of Freedom Communications Inc. have announced that they will use all eight Xpress Special Sections from CityXpress. The Xpress Special Sections being launched by Freedom papers are Home & Garden, Health & Wellness, Wheels Today, Weddings, On the Town, Your Money, Senior Living and Outdoors & Recreation. New sections introduced by CityXpress will be added to those already run by the Freedom newspapers. The company also said that the HAMILTON SPECTATOR (110k) in Ontario, Canada, has launched on-line auctions using XpressAuctions. The product manages all aspects of an auction, from item maintenance to on-line bidding, from bid management to management reporting. With products consigned to the auction by local retailers, the auction not only generates incremental revenue for the newspaper but also increases in-store traffic for merchants as potential bidders are encouraged to view auction items at the advertiserŐs store. Tennessee's CHATTANOOGA FREE PRESS (76k) has purchased a 58-seat ClassSpeed system from DTI. The new system will replace a legacy DEC classified advertising order entry system and the Pongrass pagination system the FREE PRESS has been using. The DTI installation also will provide the technology needed to meet the paper's future needs. The FREE PRESS will use Microsoft Windows 2000 and Dell 6450 servers with a Sybase database. The ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE, a sibling paper of the FREE PRESS, is also in the process of installing a 63-seat ClassSpeed system from DTI. Digital Technology International, based in Springville, Utah, is on the Web at http://www.dtint.com/. Roularta Media Group, a Belgian publishing company whose products include magazines such as KNACK, TRENDS, FOOT MAGAZINE and SPORT MAGAZINE (in Dutch) and LE VIF /L'EXPRESS, TENDANCES, TELEPRO (in French), and about 50 free distribution weekly newspapers, has selected Easypress' Atomik for all its Quark XPress-to-XML conversion. Atomik will allow content to be automatically repurposed from XPress to electronic media, including the Web and CD-ROMs. It is being implemented across a range of publications, including several regional and national magazines and newspapers. This Garbsen, Germany-based provider of network and pre-press server software has announced that its PCShare server software now supports Microsoft Windows XP clients, in addition to Windows 2000, NT, ME, 98, 95, 3.1 and DOS clients. PCShare 3 is compatible with all Windows applications and supports mounting of drives and printers via the Windows network browser. HELIOS products run on scalable servers from Apple Computer, Compaq, HP, IBM, SGI and Sun, providing reliable cross-platform support for Macintosh, DOS/Windows and UNIX-based clients. The WASHINGTON POST (760k) has announced that it has gone live with a Merlin Picture Desk, which provides real-time input and retrieval of wire service and staff photos, allowing POST editors to search for and find new images seconds after the image arrives at the paper. Like most major metropolitan newspapers, the POST deals with 1000 or more photos every day. Photos arrive from multiple wire sources, free-lancers and staff photographers around the clock. These are made available to the newsroom in real time, using the Merlin system. MerlinOne, based in Quincy, Mass., is on the Web at http://www.merlinone.com/. The JERUSALEM POST (30k), an English-language newspaper in Israel, has launched e-mailed news and information services through PublishMail. The services initially offered by the Post Internet Edition include daily headlined stories; real-time news alerts; the JERUSALEM POST's weekly news, Hi-Tech, and Software newsletters, and e-mails about recipes, travel deals and real estate. The POST also is e-mailing its famous "Dry Bones" cartoons three times a week. With the exception of the cartoons, subscribers receive these e-mailed services in their choices of HTML e-mail, AOL or plain-text formats. Knight Ridder Digital, the interactive information subsidiary of Knight Ridder and founder/operator of the Real Cities Network, and uclick, a division of Andrews McMeel Universal, have announced a strategic agreement where uclick will manage branded comic and puzzle content for Real Cities' web sites. Under the agreement, uclick will provide Real Cities with a variety of popular comics and puzzles from Universal Press Syndicate, Tribune Media Services and United Media, including such favorites as Garfield, Doonesbury, Dilbert, For Better or For Worse, Shoe, JUMBLE, crossword puzzles, PlayFour! and others. The agreement further calls for Knight Ridder Digital and uclick to cooperate in the exploration and development of new consumer-supported revenue sources, including future opportunities to generate growth through subscription-based content models.
