  • ADOBE SYSTEMS INC.
    This San Jose-based supplier of graphic arts software has announced the release of Photoshop 7.0, an upgrade to its ubiquitous image editing application.

    Photoshop 7.0, which will ship in late spring, will have new features, in addition to running natively on Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows XP. The Healing Brush feature eases the retouching of photos, including the removal of dust, scratches, blemishes and wrinkles, while preserving shading, lighting, texture and other attributes. The File Browser allows users to locate, organize and visually manage images, as well as view EXchangeable Image File (EXIF) information from digital cameras, including data captured, exposure setting and other data.

    Adobe also said two new versions of other applications are now shipping.

    LiveMotion 2.0, a web graphics and Flash animation application, now supports the import of files from Adobe's After Effects video animation software as well as the ability to export in the Flash format with streaming MP3 audio and QuickTime videos for web delivery.

    GoLive 6.0, a web-page design tool, now offers support for a variety of server-side include formats, including ASP, JSP and PHP. New features also include QuickTime 5.0 editing and Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language (SMIL) support for RealOne Player from RealNetworks.

    The estimated retail price for Photoshop 7.0 will be $609, with upgrades available for $149. LiveMotion and GoLive will each retail for $399, with a limited special introductory price of $199 and an upgrade price of $99.

  • BASEVIEW PRODUCTS INC.
    This Ann Arbor, Mich.-based supplier of publishing systems software has announced that it has installed, trained, or upgraded 26 sites in October and 12 sites in November.

    October customers include the KINSTON (N.C.) FREE PRESS (12k), while November customers include the OAKLAND PRESS (85k) in Pontiac, Mich.

  • CCI EUROPE
    Politiken Newspapers Ltd. of Denmark, publishers of EKSTRA BLADET (125k) and POLITIKEN (147k), has signed a new contract for a CCI NewsDesk Release 6 system for all of its editorial properties.

    The system will replace a CCI NewsDesk Pagination Release 4 system.

  • CREO INC.
    This Vancouver, British Columbia-based supplier of graphic arts hardware and software has announced that it has reached an out-of-court settlement with Artwork Systems Group N.V. of Belgium, regarding a patent dispute.

    The patents were directed toward various methods of automatic trapping, the technology used to reduce or eliminate misalignment between colors in multicolor printing.

    The parties mutually agreed to dismiss their claims and counterclaims. Creo further agreed to extend the license originally granted to Artwork Systems in 1997 to cover the additional trapping software now sold by Artwork. As such, the Creo trapping patents remain valid and enforceable, and nonexclusive licenses are available.

  • CYAN SOFT LTD.
    This Limassol, Cyprus-based networking supplier has announced the release of cyanPrintIP Easy OPI 4.1. The server supports the Open Pre-press Interface picture replacement standard.

    In addition to improved performance, new features in version 4.1 include printing of Portable Document Format (PDF) files through hot folders with OPI support, and the ability to turn a workstation running Microsoft Windows NT, 2000 or XP into an OPI print and file server for Macintosh clients.

  • HARRIS PUBLISHING SYSTEMS LLC.
    The HERALD COURIER (42k) of Bristol, Va., is now publishing its newspaper on Harris' Newsjaz system, while FLORIDA TODAY (82k) of Melbourne, is publishing its web site on Webjaz.

    The Bristol installation, which includes Adobe InDesign, will soon be supplemented with Harris' Jazstore archive database.

    At FLORIDA TODAY, most stories are sent to the system from a Harris NewsMaker editorial front-end system.

  • HELIOS SOFTWARE GMBH
    This Garbsen, Germany-based supplier of network and pre-press software has announced that its product line is now shipping with support for Mac OS X.

    HELIOS' server products for Mac OS X include EtherShare 2.6, PCShare 3.0, EtherShare OPI 2.1, PDF Handshake 2.0 and Print Preview 1.1.

  • PAGEFLEX INC.
    This division of Cambridge, Mass.-based Bitstream Inc. has announced the release of its Persona 1.5 desktop application for variable content publishing.

    Persona 1.5 provides optimization for the Personalized Print Markup Language (PPML) as well as Creo Variable Print Specification (VPS) output drivers. The VPS driver for Persona is available through Xerox, while the PPML driver and other supplier-specific drivers can be purchased form PageFlex.

    Persona, for Microsoft Windows, provides page layout and composition tools, including the ability to design page templates and modify composition settings, such as leading, kerning, justification and hyphenation.

  • SOFTWARE CONSULTING SERVICES LLC
    The MIDDLETOWN (N.Y.) TIMES HERALD-RECORD (82k) has signed a contract to purchase an SCS/Track ad-tracking system.

    SCS/Track will run on dual Linux servers supporting 25 ad builders running Quark XPress for Windows plus five sales manager workstations.

    Each Dell server will be equipped with 1 gigabyte of random access memory and 350 gigabytes of disk space. The servers will share a 520 gigabyte autoloader tape drive and a 400-disk compact disk virtual jukebox for system backup and ad archiving. Data replication software developed by SCS will synchronize the servers for high availability.

    At the TIMES HERALD-RECORD, SCS/Track interfaces with Ottaway Newspapers' centralized corporate AS400 order entry system for advertising. SCS's rADar edition and page management module will incorporate layout information from TIMES HERALD-RECORD's ALS dummying system from Managing Editor Inc. of Jenkintown, Pa.

    LexisNexis, a division of Reed Elsevier based in Dayton, Ohio, has contracted with Televisual, a content management and information structuring services and software company, to provide content structuring services.

    Though most LexisNexis information suppliers can provided structured data to the on-line research system, many cannot. Televisual will take page data from newspapers and magazines, select and mark keywords, and convert the text into a structured markup.
