  • CALLAS SOFTWARE GMBH
    This Berlin-based software supplier has announced the release of pdfInspektor2 for Adobe Acrobat 4 or newer versions on the Mac and Windows.

    This new version of the Portable Document Format (PDF) pre-flighting application uses more than 400 criteria to analyze the characteristics of PDF files. An extensive selection of pre-defined pre-flight profile templates, addressing most day-to-day needs, is also provided.

    In addition, the application will check for compliance with the PDF/X-3 standard, a method for exchanging newspaper advertising files being developed in Germany and Switzerland.

  • CITYXPRESS.COM CORP.
    Lee Enterprises Inc., the publisher of 23 daily newspapers based in Davenport, Iowa, has announced that it is offering a new on-line senior living special section on all of its web sites. In addition, it will also offer the section on the web sites of the five papers in which it has joint interest.

    Branded "Our Time," the senior living site attracted national sponsorship from Wal-mart Stores Inc. Each Lee newspaper will also print and distribute an "Our Time" special section.

  • COLD NORTH WIND INC.
    The TORONTO STAR (460k) has announced that its electronic, full-text, full-image database of its pages dating back to 1894 is now available on-line, using technologies from this Ottawa-based company. The pages are marketed by Torstar Syndication Services and Micromedia Ltd. of Toronto.

    The archive, which was processed from microfilm, contains data from move than 30,000 issues totaling more than 1.9 million pages.

  • DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY INTERNATIONAL
    THE COURIER-JOURNAL (222k) of Louisville, Ky., has begun installing a 64-workstation implementation of DTI's ClassSpeed 5.0 system. The workstations will run on Dell computers running Windows, while the servers will be two Sun Enterprise 420s, running the Solaris 8 operating system.

    THE COURIER-JOURNAL, owned by Gannett Co. Inc. of McLean, Va., also said it was making plans to redesign its classified section, implement the 50-inch newsprint web reduction and build an $80 million production plant.

  • MEDIA COMMAND INC.
    The BRISBANE COURIER MAIL (225k) and the SUNDAY MAIL (580k), divisions of Queensland Newspapers Pty. Ltd. of Brisbane, Australia, have selected and installed Media Command's CyberAd system. The new installation is an upgrade to the company's legacy Cybergraphic system; Cybergraphic is a predecessor company to Media Command.

    In conjunction with the installation of this new technology, Queensland Newspapers and its parent company, News Ltd. of Sydney, Australia, are taking the opportunity to consolidate all their Brisbane-area advertising sales into a single call center.

    The upgrade will cover 153 workstations at Quest Community Newspapers and the COURIER MAIL.

  • MERLINONE INC.
    The Office of News & Public Affairs of Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass., has announced that it will outsource its news photo workflow with the MerlinHosted Digital Asset Management system.

    Librarians and editors from the university will manage the collection through a cross-platform dedicated client, while users search and request images and other assets through a web browser. All images will be watermarked, and requests for image reuse will be routed automatically by the system.

  • NEWSENGIN INC.
    The Tribune-Review Publishing Co. of western Pennsylvania has selected NewsEngin to provide its next-generation editorial system.

    The product will be deployed at all of the company's daily newspapers: the PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW (125k), the VALLEY NEWS-DISPATCH (31k) of New Kensington, THE LEADER-TIMES (10k) of Kittanning, the DAILY COURIER (9k) of Connellsville and the VALLEY INDEPENDENT (1k) of Monessen.

    As part of the deployment, NewsEngin will provide customization so that all six of its newspapers can automatically share stories and story schedules.

    The company also said the Medill News Service of Chicago has installed My NewsEngin for its staff of 40 reporters. The service's clients now receive stories automatically in the format they request -- e-mailed attachments, e-mailed messages or File Transfer Protocol (FTP) delivery.

  • NANDO MEDIA
    This Raleigh, N.C.-based division of Sacramento's McClatchy Co. has announced that it has finished the first phase of its Web portal production tool, Community Cornerstone.

    Based on Nando Media's Digital Workbench content management system, Community Cornerstone's base level includes the Digital Workbench, the Direct2Local business directory, an events calendar, a sports-score database and links to entertainment and news modules included in most city guides. Publishers have the option to use all or part of the Community Cornerstone elements.

    The company said it had converted McClatchy's nine newspaper portal sites to Community Cornerstone.

  • QUARK INC.
    This Denver-based supplier of graphic arts software has announced the release of Quark Digital Media System (Quark DMS) Version 1.6, the product's second major upgrade since its release in January 2001.

    The Quark DMS 1.6 release adds support for the Internet and business information with the addition of an eXtensible Stylesheet Language (XSL) processor and a web site import tool.

  • SALESFORCE.COM INC.
    USA TODAY (2.1m), a division of Gannett Co. Inc. of McLean, Va., has announced that it has selected Salesforce.com for its global customer relationship management needs. USA TODAY sales teams will be able to use a central repository of account information on systems provided by Salesforce.com.

    USA TODAY began a pilot project with Salesforce.com, whose service is subscription based, in April 2001, rolling out the application to its internal sales force in Virginia. The company cut short the pilot and began implementing the application to employees in Washington, New York and London.

  • TERA UK LTD.
    Examiner Publications Ltd. of Cork, Republic of Ireland, has chosen Tera's GN3 editorial publishing system to produce the IRISH EXAMINER (57k) and the CORK EVENING ECHO (26k).

    The companies said the system includes 126 workstations in a deal worth 1 million pounds (US$1.4 million). The parent company of Examiner, Thomas Crosbie Holdings, said it plans to expand its use of Tera products to other titles as well.

    This Ann Arbor, Mich.-based supplier of raster image processing (RIP) systems has announced the release of a driver for both the 42- and 60-inch versions of the Hewlett Packard DesignJet 5000 inkjet proofer.

    The driver controls the HP 5000 proofers at high speeds and supports six ink colors. The HP 5000 can be driven via a network interface or a fast-parallel connection to an existing RIP platform, which could be a Windows NT, Windows 2000 or Macintosh (System 8.6 or 9) Xitron Navigator RIP.

    The company is also offering a stand-alone Navigator Xitron Proofer RIP (XPR) on either platform. The Xitron Navigator is based on the Global Graphics' Harlequin RIP.
