  • AUTOLOGIC INFORMATION INTERNATIONAL INC.
    The GASTON GAZETTE (30k) of Gastonia, N.C., has installed two APS 3850/120 computer-to-plate imagers. The paper says that it has realized a deadline advantage over its older film-based workflow of at least 20 minutes. The paper, which is a NEW YORK TIMES regional printing plant, now produces between 1000 and 1200 plates per week.

  • BASEVIEW PRODUCTS INC.
    Georgia's VALDOSTA DAILY TIMES (19k) and seven affiliated newspapers have installed AdManagerPro, Baseview's ad order entry system.

    Eight AdManagerPro workstations were installed at Valdosta, along with Baseview's ClassFlow XTension for paginating classified pages. Other papers in the group include the AMERICUS TIMES-RECORDER (7k), the CORDELE DISPATCH (5k), the MOULTRIE OBSERVER (7k), the THOMASVILLE TIMES-ENTERPRISE (10k) and the TIFTON GAZETTE (8k) -- all in Georgia -- and the semiweekly SUWANNEE DEMOCRAT in Live Oak, Fla.

    This Hojbjerg, Denmark-based digital pre-press software company, has announced CaslonFlow 2.0.

    This hot folder-based workflow system enables the design and use of advanced workflows without programming or scripting. The required folders and applications can be added to the workflow by drag-and-drop, and the flow is defined by connecting them to each other.

    New features in the latest version of the application include a new user interface, job tickets based on the Job Definition Format (JDF), browser-client to submit and monitor jobs and advanced user administration.

    HELSINGIN SANOMAT (475k) and ILTA-SANOMAT (209k), both of Helsinki, Finland, have agreed to upgrade their CCI NewsDesk systems to Release 6.

    The two papers, both owned by the Sandma Corp., hope to establish a common editorial system that utilizes a number of common workflows, database setup, user setups and integrations with only a minimum of individual setup for the two papers and the HS magazine.

    This Vancouver, British Columbia-based provider of on-line and print special section content has announced XpressEvents, a line of on-line event special sections.

    Based on a standard three-page template, XpressEvents can be tailored to a variety of event themes, such as children's festivals, career fairs, automobile shows or athletic events. Each package includes a directory of businesses serving the event category, a shopping guide, print ads on-line, coupons, web brochures and banner advertising.

    The company also said that it has signed an agreement with Healthology Inc., a provider of streaming video webcasts, to offer Healthology's health video webcasts and editorial content.

    This Miami-based supplier of graphic arts software has released DenebaShare 1.0 for Microsoft Windows, a stand-alone application that provides digital photo server, viewer and organizer functions.

    All images remain under the control of the owner and are instantly available over the Internet. Users need only a web browser and a password to navigate and share photo collections. DenebaShare features full encryption and password-protection; it ships with Adobe Illustrator- and Photoshop-compatible plug-in filters.

    The company said a Mac OS X version of the application would be available in late winter.

    NOW Magazine, Toronto's alternative weekly with a circulation of 110,000, has agreed to license Informatel's One-Stop Advertising Solution.

    The integrated system includes AdPlus, an ad order entry system; AdPlacer, a classified ad pagination system, and Prospector, a sales management and marketing system.

    The company also said it has agreed to install a 10-user system for Michigan's MONROE EVENING NEWS (22k) that will include AdPlus-Classified, AdPlacer and PRISM, Informatel's Internet advertising management system.

    Knight Ridder Digital of San Jose has signed an affiliation agreement with this movie ticketing service to provide on-line co-branded movie ticket purchasing to several Real Cities web sites, including Charlotte.com, TwinCities.com, KansasCity.com, Miami.com, Philly.com and BayArea.com.

    MovieTickets.com is a joint venture between Hollywood Media Corp., AMC Entertainment, National Amusements, Famous Players, Marcus Theaters, Hoyts Cinemas and Viacom. It is on the Web at http://www.movietickets.com/.


  • NEWSSTAND INC.
    The NEW YORK TIMES (1.1m) is now offering an exact replica of its New York edition that can be downloaded via the Internet using technology from NewsStand.

    The Electronic Edition of the TIMES can be downloaded and then read off-line; the copy is then available for reading for seven days. A seven-day subscription costs $6.70 per week, a five-day subscription is $3.25 and a Sunday-only subscription costs $3.40.

    Readers can also purchase single copies via an electronic "wallet," which requires a minimum purchase of $10 to download single issues of the Electronic Edition.

    NewsStand also said the GLOBE AND MAIL (309k), a Canadian national newspaper based in Toronto, is now available via NewsStand as well.

    This Blue Bell, Pa.-based provider of publishing systems has announced that it has agreed to a close working relationship with Adobe Systems Inc. of San Jose.

    The company has said that it will integrate Adobe InDesign, a page layout application, into its Unisys e-@ction Editorial Solutions. The two companies will continue efforts to incorporate other Adobe technologies such as the eXtensible Metadata Platform (XMP) into Unisys' media systems. XMP provides a common framework that standardizes the creation, processing and interchange of document metadata.

    Unisys also said that Add Inc. of Waupaca, Wis., has agreed to upgrade to the latest release of Unisys e-@ction Advertising Manager, including the accounts receivables module. Add Inc., a subsidiary of Journal Communications Inc. of Milwaukee, publishes more than 110 weeklies, shoppers and niche publications. The system consists of 130 workstations.
