  • ANYGRAAF USA INC.
    This Finnish company with U.S. offices in Gaithersburg, Md., has added two new products to its Doris line of publishing system software.

    Doris Proofer is a page proofing system that provides users with a browser-based interface to preview and approve raster image processed (RIPed) pages prior to imaging. Integrated into the Doris Planner edition management and planning tool and the Doris Composer page pairing system, Doris Proofer provides users with full-color thumbnails for production flow control as well as more detailed images that can be reviewed in image editing software such as Adobe Photoshop for color control.

    Doris Work Shift List is a browser-based tool for managing staff scheduling and shifts; it is a utility that can help newsrooms streamline the management of staff through the use of individual and group schedules.

  • ATEX MEDIA SOLUTIONS INC.
    Two Dutch daily newspapers, LEEUWARDEN COURANT (111k) and NIEUWSBLAD VAN HET NOORDEN (209k), as well as two other titles, have signed a contract for a 300-workstation Atex Enterprise advertising system. The papers are owned by Noordelijke Dagblad Combinatie of The Netherlands.

    The agreement calls for Atex's customer support group to complete Phase One of the advertising order entry and production system's installation -- which includes software for classified order entry, invoice management and sales contract management -- by early 2002. About half of the 300 workstations will be installed at sites remote from the newspapers' main offices.

  • CALLAS SOFTWARE GMBH
    This Berlin-based supplier of publishing software has released QXPlan2, a Portable Document Format (PDF)-based production planning and tracking tool.

    QXPlan2 works in a variety of environments, including advertising, editorial or pre-press. Callas and its integration partner A&F Computersysteme AG have implemented QXPlan2 at two Quark Publishing System (QPS) production sites in Switzerland. The product will also work with Adobe InDesign and InCopy.

  • DENEBA SYSTEMS INC.
    This Miami-based supplier of graphic arts software has released Canvas 8 Professional Edition for Mac OS X. The application integrates photo editing, page layout, presentation and web graphics into one program.

    Canvas 8 for OS X, compatible with Mac OS 9 and above, contains many new enhancements. Features include vector and raster sequence recording, and support for AppleScript, ColorSync and QuickTime. The new version also contains customizable web image slicing as well as direct support for Flash and Portable Document Format (PDF) export.

    Registered users of Canvas 7 for Macintosh can upgrade to Canvas 8 for Mac OS X for $129.95; owners of previous versions can upgrade for $169.95. Registered owners of competitive graphics products can purchase Canvas 8 for $249.95, while the application itself has an estimated street price of $400.

  • DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY INTERNATIONAL
    MARKISCHE ODERZEITUNG (120k) of Frankfurt, Germany, has signed an agreement to purchase a 145-seat NewsSpeed editorial system.

    The project includes editorial page design and layout in PageSpeed, which is based on Adobe InDesign, and text editing in SpeedWriter, which is based on Adobe InCopy.

    A Wide Area Network (WAN) to allow for the sharing of stories and pages will permit users at the newspaper's five remote editorial sites to readily access information from the other locations.

  • EASYPRESS TECHNOLOGIES LTD.
    This London-based supplier of graphic arts software has announced the availability of a demonstration version of its Atomik 2.0 Quark XPress XTension allowing for text export in the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) format.

    The automated Atomik 2.0 extracts the content of an entire XPress document in a single pass. Atomik also supports automated image extraction as well as the extraction of tabular data into an XML table format.

    Atomik 2.0 includes a Ruleset Manager for configuration of documents; box ordering to control exactly how Atomik runs through a document, and XPress' box-grouping information and dividing lines for further control and automation.

  • HARRIS PUBLISHING SYSTEMS CORP.
    The Press Association of London, the national news agency of the United Kingdom and Ireland, has selected two modules from Harris' Jazbox product line -- Newsjaz and Webjaz -- to deliver content to its customers. The Press Association estimated the contract to include more than 400 workstations.

    The Press Association is the main news wire service for the United Kingdom and Ireland, serving all the national and regional newspapers of the countries and 95 percent of all the broadcasters. The organization also provides a comprehensive, nationwide arts and lifestyle listing service, and operates the London Press Service, an agency offering news, features and pictures from Britain for use by journalists overseas.

  • KODAK POLYCHROME GRAPHICS
    The Norwalk, Conn.-based supplier of graphic arts supplies has announced that it has acquired the worldwide color proofing and software business of Imation Inc., of Oakdale, Minn.

    Kodak Polychrome Graphics' acquisition includes the full line of Matchprint-brand products and proofing systems, and the Verifi Accurate Web Color, Color Fidelity Module, ColorKey and Rainbow Proofing systems. Upon completion of the deal, 500 Imation employees will go to work for Kodak Polychrome Graphics.

    Knight Ridder Digital, operator of the Real Cities network of city and regional web sites, has said that it will power the obituary sections of Philly.com, Miami.com and DFW.com with software from Legacy.com.

    The companies said that while obituary sections on those three sites were using Legacy.com immediately, other major markets served by Knight Ridder would be added.

  • PURUP-ESKOFOT INC.
    This Danish company with U.S. offices in Kennesaw, Ga., has announced a variety of enhancements to its product line.

    -- The DMX product line of computer-to-plate (CTP) devices aimed at the newspaper industry has a new model, the DMX HS, which is capable of producing 90 panorama plates per hour. At U.S. newspapers using the 50-inch web, these plates can be cut into three, effectively tripling the output to 270 plates per hour. In addition, the DMS line now offers machines with resolutions of up to 2450 dots-per-inch (dpi).

    -- PERfection, the bitmap editing software package, is now in version 2.0, providing enhanced capabilities that include the ability to read and write a variety of new file formats, including the Scitex New Linework format. Also new are a resampling function that allows users to change the size and/or resolution of a CopyDot image, a new batch processing function, rotation capability and an improved text tool.

    -- EskoNet 1.5, a CTP workflow product, now offers a press allocation tool, advanced version control, new plate copy management functions, electronic feedback from plate processing equipment, International Color Consortium (ICC)-based bitmap proofing (based on technology from the German company BESTcolor) and browser-based page approval.

  • UNISYS CORP.
    The DENVER POST (306k) and the ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS (310k) have announced that they have signed a multimillion-dollar contract for an editorial publishing system from Unisys.

    The POST and the NEWS entered into a joint operating agreement earlier this year administered by the Denver Newspaper Agency, which is coordinating installation of the system for the newspapers.

    The new publishing system includes 350 workstations -- 175 at each newspaper -- running News Content Manager (Hermes) for editorial and pagination, and News Gathering Manager for wire services and remote communications management. A single cluster of servers will power the systems for both newspapers and will be administered by the Denver Newspaper Agency.

    The Unisys system replaces an Atex system at the NEWS and a system from the former System Integrators Inc. at the POST.

    This Netherlands-based provider of software for cross-media workflow has announced the release of Smart Styles 2.0 and Smart Layout 2.0.

    The latest version of Smart Styles adds high-level object styling to Adobe InDesign. The new version supports all the new InDesign 2.0 features including transparency, drop shadows, feathering and tables. Besides this, the new version offers improved ease-of-use, and scripting support has been added.

    Smart Layout 2.0 offers article productivity, include the automatic eXtensible Markup Language (XML) tagging, relieving the user from having to tag elements manually.
