  • ADOBE SYSTEMS INC.
A U.S. District Court judge in Los Angeles tentatively ruled yesterday that Adobe has infringed on the copyright of a database maker and that the San Jose-based company must cease selling Adobe InDesign 1.5 and Adobe InCopy 1.1.

Trio Systems LLC of Pasadena, Calif., has sued Adobe for violating a 1997 licensing agreement that allowed Trio's software, C-Index, to be included in the Adobe products. The judge granted a preliminary injunction against Adobe because Trio had established a "likelihood of success on the merits" of its case.

Adobe has denied Trio's allegation and has filed a counter-suit against the company.

Further, Adobe has said that no Trio code is present in InDesign 2.0 or InCopy 2.0. The company is planning to release the new versions of the page layout application and writing and editing application in the late winter or early spring of 2002.

Trio Systems is on the Web at http://www.triosystems.com/, while Adobe is at http://www.adobe.com/.

  • AGFA GRAPHICS SYSTEMS
Two New York Times Co. newspapers -- the NEW YORK TIMES (1m) and the BOSTON GLOBE (500k) -- have agreed to use Agfa as the exclusive supplier of digital imaging plates for computer-to-plate production at the two papers.

The TIMES supervised a testing of Agfa's N91 plate against competitive products and found that the N91 plate provided superior print quality, run length and production speed. Agfa will provide the plate for printing facilities in Edison, N.J., College Point, N.Y., and Boston.

Agfa also said that it had signed a long-term agreement with Strobbe Graphics NV of Ypres, Belgium, for the manufacture of the Agfa Polaris platesetter. The Polaris line was designed by Strobbe for Agfa to meet the needs of the newspaper industry.

Agfa said that its recent acquisition of Autologic Information International Inc. of Thousand Oaks, Calif., would not affect its commitment to the Polaris product line, saying that the two companies' products "complement" one another.

Lastly, Agfa Graphic Systems' parent, Agfa-Gevaert AG of Belgium, said that its consumer-oriented Agfanet would be offering an additional 24 on-line photography courses to its existing 44 Agfa Photo Courses. These new courses will be in digital photography and four have already been posted; a new course is posted every month.
