  • ATEX MEDIA SOLUTIONS INC.
    The German newspaper HNA KASSEL (270k) has signed a contract with Atex to upgrade its five-year-old Atex Enterprise Advertising System. The deal calls for a software upgrade, a system reconfiguration that relies on Citrix servers and the installation of Atex's latest release of its Atex Online Advertising product.

    Atex's professional service engineering group expects the project to be completed early next year.

  • CAREERBUILDER INC.
    CareerBuilder, a provider of on-line recruitment resources based in Reston, Va., has extended the expiration date for its tender offer for HeadHunter.NET Inc. of Norcross, Ga., to Nov. 6. CareerBuilder -- along with its owners, Tribune Co. of Chicago and Knight Ridder of San Jose -- announced in August that it would acquire the on-line recruitment service. It has twice extended its offer as permitted under federal antitrust regulations.

    The acquisition, valued at $200 million, will be made by a new subsidiary of Career Holdings Inc., which owns CareerBuilder, which will make a tender offer for all HeadHunter common stock. The transaction is expected to be completed late this year or early in 2002. Knight Ridder and Tribune each own half of Career Holdings.

    The combined company will have a significantly larger presence in the recruitment arena, positioning CareerBuilder to more effectively challenge Monster.com of Maynard, Mass. CareerBuilder has 4 million unique visitors, most seeking positions in high-tech fields. By adding HeadHunter's 2.5 million unique visitors, CareerBuilder expects to have not only a larger audience, but a broader audience, with 25,000 companies using CareerBuilder to find suitable prospects.

    This fall, newspapers owned by Knight Ridder and Tribune have begun branding their help wanted classified pages as CareerBuilder. Among the first 10 papers to participate are the CHICAGO TRIBUNE and LOS ANGELES TIMES.

  • CONVERA CORP.
    Morris Communication Corp., publishers of 27 daily newspapers and nine non-daily papers, has agreed to use the Convera applications RetrievalWare and FileRoom in a microfilm archiving system that Morris has developed for its own use and will market to the entire newspaper industry through its Morris Digital Works division.

    The first Morris-owned property to install the system is Georgia's AUGUSTA CHRONICLE (73k), which will convert nearly 1 million pages of information from microfilm to digital content dating back to 1786. The CHRONICLE's archive came on-line last month.

  • DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY INTERNATIONAL
    Arkansas' largest daily newspaper, Little Rock's ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE (189k), as well as several other newspaper in the state, plan to implement DTI's ClassSpeed advertising software with a contact management application and the ClassSpeed Web Order Entry option.

    Wehco Media Inc., the parent of the DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE, recent leased the properties of Community Publishers, which includes the NORTH STAR TIMES (14k) of Fayetteville and the BENTON COUNTY DAILY RECORD (11k) of Bentonville, and seven weeklies. The classified sections of the TIMES and the RECORD have been merged into the DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE'S section.

    At the DEMOCRAT GAZETTE, a 63-seat ClassSpeed system will replace a CText 6.1 order-entry system and a Pongrass pagination system.

    Heidelberger Druckmachinen AG has announced that it will include Enfocus' PitStop Portable Document Format (PDF) preflighting and correction technology in its new raster image processor (RIP) and workflow system called MetaDimension.

    PitStop provides MetaDimension with not only preflighting and auto correction functions, but also allows for more automated workflows with its hot-folder feature. In addition, PitStop Professional is used to provide interactive editing capabilities to the PDF file itself, creating a full PDF workflow. Both PitStop Server and PitStop professional are available as options with MetaDimension.

    This Garbsen, Germany-based supplier of pre-press server applications has announced beta releases of its entire product line that include support for Apple Computer's Mac OS X. Helios products can be used with servers from Apple, Compaq, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Linux/Pentium, SGI and Sun.

    Also, the latest beta release of EtherShare OPI 2.1 includes support for two new file formats, PNG and BMP. PNG is an image format that is rapidly gaining acceptance in the world of web browser technology and is supplanting the CompuServe GIF format; the format supports interlaced -- or progressive -- images. BMP is the default image format for the Windows operating system.

    In addition, PCShare DHCP now includes dynamic DNS update, which allows the server to recognize the machine name in addition to its IP address.

    The Real Cities Network division of this subsidiary of Knight Ridder of San Jose has announced that it will be providing local news information for the Sprint PCS nationwide wireless web network.

    The service initially will be available to Sprint PCS customers in 15 Real Cities markets, including Akron-Cleveland, Charlotte, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Fort Worth, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Miami, Minneapolis-St. Paul, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Seattle and San Francisco-San Jose.

  • LAZER-FARE MEDIA SERVICES LTD.
    The GLOBE AND MAIL (355k), a Canadian national newspaper based in Toronto, is using pre-press software from Lazer-Fare to automate the assembly of its nationwide editions.

    The GLOBE AND MAIL uses two PostStrip applications to automate page production, PageTools and PaperView. PageTools is a workflow engine based on the Portable Document Format (PDF). PageTools keeps track of which ads are to go on which pages of which editions, and then automatically marries editorial and advertising PDFs at deadline.

    PostStrip PaperView is a production monitoring system that allows newspaper staff to follow the progress of editorial and advertising components through the production process using any standard web browser.

    The additional applications will complement PostStrip FlowTools which was installed last spring. FlowTools has helped the GLOBE AND MAIL attain a high level of PDF integration in all its production and output systems.

    This Regensburg, Germany-based company has announced two new modules to its Asura and Solvero Portable Document Format (PDF) workflow systems.

    The Garda platform-independent application monitors Asura to ensure that it won't shut down, as well as providing event logging.

    The PlugWEBin add-on module to Asura and Solvero, automatically outputs the entire contents of PDF, PostScript or EPS pages as HTML, preserving the original page layout and securely converting text, images and graphics.

    This Cambridge, Mass.-based subsidiary of Bitstream Inc., has released an upgrade to its dynamic composition product Mpower, used in-document customization and web-to-print marketing.

    Mpower 3.0 new features include advanced copyfitting rules, native Portable Document Format (PDF) rendering, support for placed PDF, spot colors and tints and new tools for deploying Web-to-print products.

    The DAILY OKLAHOMAN (223k) of Oklahoma City recently installed a multifunction data warehousing system from this Dallas-based supplier.

    The data warehouse was developed to support the OKLAHOMAN's new database marketing service, but it also supports the traditional circulation and print advertising business operations. Stonebridge also helped the OKLAHOMAN to develop user-defined multidimensional databases, or "cubes," to enable users in all three business areas to gain more business reporting and analytical capabilities.

    Stonebridge used Cognos Power Play business intelligence software in constructing the warehouse, and users access the data via a web portal built using Cognos Upfront. The portal was designed to mirror the look-and-feel of the paper's corporate intranet.

    The web site of California's ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER (353k) will be using advanced directory technology from this Westboro, Mass. company.

    MyOrangeCounty.com will feature private-labeled versions of Switchboard's white pages, Yellow Pages, e-mail directory and product search functions. Additionally, the site will carry Switchboard's Maps On Us to supply users with advanced mapping and driving directions throughout the United States.

    Both parties will sell display advertising into the customized directories, with the paper's ads also appearing on the Switchboard web site, with both parties sharing in the revenues.
