  • ADSTAR INC.
    This Marina del Rey, Calif.-based application service provider for the classified advertising industry has introduced AdStar Online, a new classified ad transaction service for recruitment advertising agencies.

    AdStar has also announced agreements to provide access to AdStar Online to such on-line job services as Dice.com, JobScience.com, CampusCareer.com and Regional Help Wanted.

    AdStar Online allows advertising agencies to use the tools with which they are comfortable to create print ads and post jobs to on-line job boards at the same time.

  • AGFA GEVAERT NV
    This Mortsel, Belgium-based conglomerate that has products in pre-press publishing systems has announced that it has agreed to acquire all the outstanding stock of Autologic Information International Inc. of Thousand Oaks, Calif.

    Agfa said that it would be offering $7.12 per share for the publicly held Autologic Information International (AII), and valued the all-cash transaction at $45.5 million. The companies said that all of AII's directors and executive officers -- as well as the company's majority stockholder, Volt Information Sciences Inc. of Blue Bell, Pa. -- have agreed to tender their shares in the offer.

    AII has its antecedents back to the early days of electronic type composition and is the product of a variety of mergers, the most recent of which was when Autologic Inc. and Information International Inc. merged in 1995. The company has 370 workers worldwide and sales last fiscal year were $81 million.

    Agfa said that the deal is subject to the "customary conditions" and that it was expected to be completed before year-end.

    Thailand's BANGKOK POST (50k) has begun publishing its on-line edition with Atex Prestige Web system.

    Prestige Web examines the editorial database, identifies the stories chosen for on-line publication and then delivers content dynamically to the BANGKOK POST web server. Prestige Web automatically shapes the headlines, text and photographs to fit pre-designed templates and then publishes it on the web site.

    Prestige Web is installed as an on-line accessory to Atex Prestige, the company's editorial, pagination and content and document management system. At the POST, however, Prestige Web is tightly integrated with a third-party editorial system.

  • COLD NORTH WIND INC.
    Mexico's Institute of Bibliographic Research, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and Canada's Cold North Wind have signed a letter of intent to pursue the digitization of a "significant" number of historical newspapers and periodicals held at UNAM in Mexico City.

    The Institute of Bibliographic Research, through its holdings of both the National Library and the National Newspapers and Magazine Library, has a "rich" collection of Mexican national history from the 18th and 19th centuries, and the first two decades of the 20th century. The collection exists both in the original paper format and on microfilm. The library also possesses contemporary publications, including newspapers and magazines from 1917 to 2000.

    This Limal, Belgium-based software supplier has announced Silhouette, an application for converting black-and-white and color images into vector graphics ready for use in Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia Freehand and other applications.

    Silhouette, marketed under the name ArtLine since 1994, has a variety of image correction features, including straightening, sharpening, suppressing unnecessary points, converting "flat curves" into straight lines, aligning segments on the same axis and smoothing of tangents.

    The GULF NEWS (91k) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, has purchased a 100-seat Sales Command display and classified advertising system together with Cyber$ell.Web. The system also includes integrated customer relationship management and business intelligence reporting.

    This will be the first Cyber$ell installation in the Middle East, following successful installations in North America, Australia and Asia-Pacific.

    The Xerox-Imation system offers low cost -- both for the system itself and for the proofs it creates -- and is the first toner-based system to meet the SWOP certification.

    Under the terms of the certification process, Imation Corp. of Oakdale, Minn., supplied the SWOP Technical Committee numerical specifications and measurements to consistently match DocuColor 12 and Matchprint Professional Server color output to the appearance of a Certified Press Proof.
