  • ARTESIA TECHNOLOGIES INC.
    Home Box Office (HBO), the AOL Time Warner company that provides television programming, has agreed to use Artesia's TEAMS digital asset management system to provide the framework for the network's digital library project.

    Artesia has also said that it has entered into an agreement with Precision Graphics Inc., under which the two companies will cooperate in offering a full range of products and services to help customers organize, manage and maximize the value of their digital assets.

  • ATEX MEDIA SOLUTIONS INC.
    The IRISH TIMES (116k) of Dublin, Republic of Ireland, has purchased a full suite of Enterprise advertising software from Atex. The new 100-seat system will replace an existing Atex J-11 advertising system.

    The Enterprise purchase is just one part of a modernization program that includes a new print production facility.

  • GROUP LOGIC INC.
    This Arlington, Va.-based software supplier has announced upgrades to its two main products, MassTransit and ExtremeZ-IP.

    MassTransit 4.0 is an Internet-based file transfer application designed to automate and manage the transfer of graphics, multimedia and other production files. The latest version provides a web browser plug-in for file transfer as well as advanced interfaces to SQL databases. The product line now comes in three versions: MassTransit Service Provider Edition, MassTransit Enterprise and MassTransit professional.

    ExtremeZ-IP 2.0 is file- and printer-server software that uses the TCP/IP protocol to accelerate the speed with which Macintosh workstations can access Windows 2000 or Windows NT servers and their printers. The company says that the software can increase file-sharing speeds up to five times over Microsoft and Apple native tools for Mac-to-Windows file sharing.

    The latest version includes an optional IP Print Support feature, which eliminates the need for the AppleTalk protocol to be used by Macs to talk to printers.

  • HARRIS PUBLISHING SYSTEMS CORP.
    Two papers in New Brunswick, Canada, the TIMES & TRANSCRIPT (38k) of Moncton and the DAILY GLEANER (26k) of Fredericton, have agreed to upgrade their existing Harris systems to the company's latest versions.

    The papers will upgrade a total of 46 editorial workstations (23 at each paper) to NewsMaker 4.0. They will also upgrade their existing CASH advertising system to AdPower, with Harris AdPag for classified pagination.

  • IDEALHIRE INC.
    Founded in June, this firm based in Scottsdale, Ariz., has taken over the IdealHire assets from Pentawave Inc.

    The company, founded by Pentawave's primary investor and former chairman, Bruce Culver, has transferred all Pentawave employees and customers involved with IdealHire to the new company.

    IdealHire has also said that it has released Version 2.0 of its software. The latest version offers services in small increments. Employment advertisers can start with simple e-cruiting systems such as keyword searchable on-line classifieds and then add new modules such as candidate-matching and ranking capabilities.

    Newspapers can now "scrape" job descriptions from an employer's corporate web site, so they can be redistributed to the newspaper's web site and be included in its on-line searchable database.

    The Weather Underground Inc. has signed an agreement with LATSI for worldwide newspaper representation.

    The Weather Underground is an Internet content provider which specializes in real-time delivery of weather conditions, forecasts and warnings. The company provides customized weather solutions to newspaper web sites, as well as Internet service providers, broadcasters and the wireless industry. Weather Underground currently publishes in 57 languages.

  • MANAGING EDITOR INC.
    This Jenkintown, Pa.-based software development and integration firm has announced the release of TruEdit, a system that integrates Adobe InCopy and Adobe InDesign into a folder-based workflow management system.

    TruEdit allows designers and editors to work on the same page at the same time, sending text and design updates back-and-forth. The integration between the two applications allows designers working on a layout in InDesign to export content to an InCopy document for editors to revise.

    Because InCopy and InDesign share the same software architecture and use the same composition engine, editors can copyfit text to the page in WYSIWYG or galley mode, using the same hyphenation, style sheets and column and page breaks.

    TruEdit, bundled with InCopy for either Macintosh or Windows, is available for purchase in the United States for US$499 and TruEdit bundled with English InDesign is US$899. For publishers already using InDesign and InCopy, the U.S. version of the TruEdit InCopy plug-in is US$200 and the TruEdit InDesign plug-in is US$249.

  • NET-LINX PUBLISHING SOLUTIONS
    O JOGO, a daily sports newspaper in Porto, Portugal, has signed a contract with Net-Linx for a 67-seat Insiight editorial system to produce its daily 64-page sports tabloid.

    The publisher has chosen a Lotus Domino database for story management, user account administration and reporter assignments, while Adobe's InCopy will be used to edit stories. Page layout will be done with Adobe's InDesign.

    The paper has also chosen the Insiight Digital Asset Management (IDAM) application to handle all graphics workflow, including wire, as well as production archiving. O JOGO's existing database of 75,000 photos will be migrated to IDAM, which provides browser-based access to the database.

    The server applications will run under Windows NT, while clients will be a mix of Windows and Macintosh.

    The O JOGO system was sold through Vamor EG, Net-Linx's distributor in Portugal; Vamor will provide first-line customer support.

  • PAGEFLEX INC.
    This Cambridge, Mass.-based supplier of composition software has announced an expanded development and licensing agreement with Electronics for Imaging (EFI) to include Mpower, Pageflex's enterprise-level web-to-print system for variable data printing.

    Pageflex Mpower is based on NuDoc, a composition engine based on the eXtensible Markup Language (XML), which uses flexible design templates that dynamically adjust page layouts based on the sizes and shapes of the variable contents flowing into them.

    Under the agreement, EFI will distribute Mpower through its worldwide professional services division, which offers custom engineering and services for digital networked printing systems.

  • PUBLISHING BUSINESS SYSTEMS
    This Barrington, Ill.-based supplier of newspaper business systems has announced that it will offer Oracle as a relational database option for its MediaPlus line of products.

    PBS provides circulation and advertising business systems, which have in the past used the Progress relational database and the Progress 4GL application development language from Progress Software Corp.

    PBS is now offering customers a choice of either the Progress or the Oracle database.
