  • CCI EUROPE
    The WASHINGTON POST (692k) has elected to upgrade its editorial system to CCI's NewsDesk Editorial System, moving virtually all its editorial operations to one system.

    The upgrade will have the POST replace its existing System Integrators Inc. text-editing system with CCI Edit/MS Word for more than 1000 users in the newsroom, foreign and domestic bureaus, wire services and web site. The POST has been using a CCI NewsDesk Pagination System in its production process for the last three years.

    The paper plans to begin production with the new CCI system in February, with a complete rollout by the end of next year.

    CCI Europe also said that Deutscher Fachverlag, one of the largest independent trade magazine publishers in Europe, has signed a contract for a CCI NewsDesk BaseLine Solution.

    From now through the middle of next year, the system will be implemented across several publications, with about 180 editorial and layout workstations configured for 160 concurrent users.

    Further, CCI Europe said that Texas' SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS (217k) has begun live production with the company's CCI MediaStore digital archive. CCI MediaStore is based on IBM's NICA technology.

    Lastly, the company announced that it has revealed the feature-set for NewsDesk Release 6, which includes "production data consolidation" (images are being stored directly into the Oracle database) and improvements to the user interface.

  • CREOSCITEX AMERICA INC.
    This supplier of graphic arts products has announced its Trendsetter NEWS platesetter, which uses a thermal imaging device to achieve speeds of up to 200 plates per hour.

    The Trendsetter NEWS platesetters are automatic and load two plates in a single load cycle. The new model achieves its speed by using dual thermal heads for imaging, and after imaging, the plates are unloaded directly to a processor.

  • EDGIL ASSOCIATES INC.
    This North Chelmsford, Mass., provider of newspaper payment automation, interactive advertising and automated content processing software has announced the release of a new version of its EdgCapture electronic payment application.

    EdgCapture Release 3 now has an e-commerce option for secure payment processing for the Web. Electronic payment transactions are securely routed from the Web server directly into the EdgCapture system.

  • EIDOSMEDIA
    This Milan, Italy, cross-media publishing systems supplier has announced that it has signed an agreement with international information technology systems provider SchlumbergerSema, under which SchlumbergerSema will distribute EidosMedia's Methode cross-media publishing software as well as provide value-added services.

    The first customer of the new partnership will be the Spanish media group Grupo Correo. The Bilbao-based company owns regional and national newspapers and magazines as well as television stations and web portals. Grupo Correo will initially use Methode for its on-line publications, but will later evaluate the possibility of adopting the system to other applications.

  • IBM
    Rome's LA REPUBBLICA (755k) and Pressens Bild, the Swedish press agency, have announced that they have licensed IBM's Networked Interactive Content Access (NICA) digital asset management system.

    LA REPUBBLICA, which has been using NICA for image workflow and production, is expanding its use of the digital management system to include its historical archive. The expansion also includes the use of NICA as the picture archive of L'ESPRESSO magazine, which is owned by the same group as LA REPUBBLICA.

    Pressens Bild is the Associated Press' agent in Sweden and is one of the largest providers of news pictures in Sweden and the Nordic countries. The company will roll out the installation of NICA in phases, with the first phase replacing the company's existing picture archive, handling customer requests via the Internet, interfacing with the agency's billing systems and providing enhanced digital rights management. The second phase will include publishing the agency's picture archive to the Internet.

  • MACTIVE INC.
    The Melbourne, Fla.-based supplier of advertising systems has announced that its WebBase web ad order entry system is now available on personal digital assistants (PDAs).

    The new feature allows ad representatives mobility, access to information, interactive rating and connectivity to book display and retail orders for their clients.

    With a wireless PDA device, Mactive said, users do not have to synchronize PDAs with desktop computers, because orders are automatically placed and information retrieved from the production system via the WebBase server.

  • NEWSENGIN
    The BOSTON GLOBE (467k) has licensed NewsEngin's software tools to write and edit stories, track story progress, manage photo assignments, distribute wire service stories and share contacts.

    The paper worked with NewsEngin to expand its existing Lotus Domino platform to incorporate the new collaborative workflow system, which will be deployed to reporters and line-editors. NewsEngin products are based on Lotus Notes and Lotus Domino from IBM.

    Aside from writing and editing features, the NewsEngin product includes e-mail, instant messaging, wire-capture and contact management. Reporters in the field can leverage Lotus Notes remote technologies to gain access to the NewsEngin product's features.

  • SOFTWARE CONSTRUCTION CO.
    The SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE (457k) has announced that it has purchased a second MediaServer multimedia production and archive system from Software Construction Co. (SCC).

    The SCC system replaces a legacy Associated Press AP Preserver photo archive; more than 300,0000 photos will be migrated to the new system. The first MediaServer installation at the CHRONICLE was put into place last year for text archiving.

    The Nazareth, Pa.-based SCS has announced that it will be distributing the Wilkenson SCOOP editorial and news pagination system in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean.

    SCOOP, from Wilkenson SCOOP AB of Johanneshov, Sweden, is a complete editorial system which combines news planning, production management, wire and news reception, local editing and archiving. The company said that both print and web publishing are supported by SCOOP.

    Servers for the SCOOP system can be either Windows NT/2000 or UNIX; clients can be Macintosh or Windows desktops. Data management can be based on file systems, Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle databases. Both Quark XPress and Adobe InDesign are supported for pagination.

    SCOOP is installed at 130 publishing sites in 11 countries. SCOOP is a market leader throughout Scandinavia, as well as in its home country, Sweden.
