  • AGFA GEVAERT NV
    Associated Newspapers Ltd. of London has chosen this provider of output systems to install computer-to-plate systems at 30 printing facilities throughout the United Kingdom.

    Agfa was chosen by Associated Mediabase, a division of Associated Newspapers that provides technical services for the group, after an 18-month search. The company has installed the Agfa Polaris system at two Associated properties, the BRISTOL EVENING POST & PRESS (82k) and THE SENTINEL (95k) at Stoke-on-Trent, both in England. In addition to printing the local newspapers, these two sites also print remote editions of THE MAIL, the MAIL ON SUNDAY and the EVENING STANDARD.

  • BASEVIEW PRODUCTS INC.
    Ohio's YOUNGSTOWN VINDICATOR (100k) has launched a new web site using JazShak from this Ann Arbor, Mich.-based provider of publishing systems and services. The site now attracts more than 30,000 hits a week, even though the paper has not promoted it.

    Vindy.com was launched earlier this year and most of the hardware and software is hosted and maintained by staff outside of Youngstown. JazShak is a service offered by Baseview in conjunction with its parent company, Harris Publishing Systems Corp.

  • CITYXPRESS.COM CORP.
    Freedom Communications Inc. has announced that it will launch CityXpress on-line and print special sections at all 25 of its community newspapers.

    The Irvine, Calif.-based Freedom, which also publishes California's ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, has launched CityXpress' Health and Wellness Special Section at its SHELBY (N.C.) STAR (evening, 14k).

    This provider of pre-press software is now offering customers on-line access to services such as business intelligence reports, support, training and information-sharing tools.

    The new service, called eCentral, has been used by beta tester R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co. to troubleshoot and obtain service on-line. A Donnelley executive said that pre-press operators could be trained on eCentral in "no more than 15 minutes."

    Media General, the Richmond, Va.-based multimedia company, has announced that it will purchase Harris' AdPower system for 12 of its newspapers.

    Under the contract, Harris will first provide AdPower to two cluster groups in Media General's Community Newspaper Publishing Division, one in North Carolina and the other in Virginia.

    AdPower is Harris' ad order entry system which provides for scheduling in multiple publications and multiple media types.

  • HEIDELBERGER DRUCKMASCHIEN AG
    This pre-press systems supplier has announced that its new Linoscan 2200 is now available in North America.

    This high-resolution scanner will accept materials from 35mm to 12-inches-by-17-inches and uses a unique design involving two moveable mirrors.

    The scanner comes with either Linocolor Elite for Macintosh or the recently announced Newcolor 5000 for Windows. Newcolor provides for multiprocessing, allowing operators to begin work on a second scan while the first scan is being processed.

    This Dayton, Ohio-based provider of on-line research tools and services has announced Customized eSolutions, a consultation service that gives corporate customers access to customized on-line services.

    The company said that each customer desktop can be personalized with content from LexisNexis databases and coupled with a group of tools to integrate the information. The product can run on a company's existing intranet, extranet or portal.

  • NET-LINX PUBLISHING SOLUTIONS INC.
    The MIAMI HERALD (350k) has announced that it will beta test Net-Linx' Insiight editorial system, with Adobe InDesign, Adobe InCopy and TextBridge, a connector to the paper's existing System/77, provided by System Integrators, a predecessor company to Net-Linx.

    The publishing systems supplier said that any story, whether creeated in InCopy or on the HERALD's existing Coyote 3 terminals, can be placed on an InDesign page.

    Net-Linx also said that the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE (378k) has purchased 190 new Coyote XA clients for its classified advertsing department. The Coyote XA clients will replace the current OS/2-based AMTX clients on the paper's System/77 Advertising (also known as CZAR II).

    This provider of dynamic page composition software has announced .EDIT, a browser-based technology that allows for the design and editing of documents with full-featured typography and layout.

    .EDIT allows a company to provide an Internet-based page layout tool to its end users without requiring the use of any plug-ins. Templates can be created that allow companies to preserve their corporate identity by using approved fonts, design elements and images.

    The new product combines PageFlex's eXtensible Markup Language (XML)-based composition engine with a Java applet client.

    This digitial imaging software developer has announced a new, lower-cost version of its VideoFOCUS video screen-grabbing application.

    Salient Stills said that VideoFOCUSLite will be bundled with an IBM IntelliStation E Pro workstation and a Media100 analog video capture card and will retail for $9995.

    This new "mini-version" of VideoFOCUS retains all the image-making applications of the software's previously released version.

    VideoFOCUSLite enhances video frames by increasing resolution, sharpening images and making traditional video a source of pictures for photo editors.
