  • AGFA CORP.
    This Ridgefield, N.J.-based company has announced that it is among those providing technology systems for the John Fairfax Holdings Ltd.'s new printing plant under construction at Tullamarine in Melbourne, Australia.

    Agfa will supply a full computer-to-plate (CTP) turnkey operation for the pre-press section of the new facility. The $220 million facility is scheduled to produce its first print products later this year, and will be fully operational by mid-2002.

  • ARTESIA TECHNOLOGIES
    Based in Rockville, Md., this digital asset management company has announced an agreement under which the company will acquire the assets of Marcus Technology Inc., a marketing automation provider with more than 100 customers.

    Marcus Technology develops rich-media tools for marketing supply-chain automation including pre-press, printing, publishing and product packaging activities. The terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

  • ATEX MEDIA SOLUTIONS
    The Consumer Magazine & Internet Group of PRIMEDIA, Inc. has purchased this Bedford, Mass.-based company's Enterprise advertising system, replacing a GraphX classified ad system.

    The ad order entry and production system will include Atex Architect for publication design and ad placement, the newly released Enterprise IAR for processing accounts receivable, and Atex On Line Advertising, which permits advertisers to book both print and web ads via the Internet.

    While most of the servers and 32 workstations will be installed at PRIMEDIA's New York City production offices, Atex database administrators in Bedford will remotely manage the system's operations over the Internet.

  • CCI EUROPE
    FAEDRELANDSVENNEN (47k), of Kristiansand, became the first Norwegian newspaper to purchase a system from this Danish company, whose U.S. offices are in Kennesaw, Ga. The paper recently purchased CCI NewsDesk BaseLine and CCI MediaStore.

    CCI NewsDesk BaseLine streamlines the editorial process from story creation to final publication, on-line and in print. The system allows for a number of customization options even though it is based on a predefined workflow and preconfigured system integration.

  • CREOSCITEX
    This Boston-based division of Creo Products Inc. of Vancouver, British Columbia, demonstrated InSite, Internet tools for Prinergy Powerpack, the workflow for packaging pre-press, at the recent Converting Machinery/Materials Exposition International in Chicago.

    InSite enables packaging printers/converters and trade shops to provide their customers with the ability to submit compressed, encrypted files and forms via the Internet, check job status, perform remote proofing, and approve or reject forms.

    InSite also allows Prinergy Powerpack users to collaborate on-line by viewing the full resolution production data. Participants located anywhere in the world can simultaneously view files or forms, take measurements, annotate content, and view each other's annotations while chatting simultaneously.

  • IBM CORP.
    The COLUMBUS (Ohio) DISPATCH's central archive and image production system will be moved over to Networked Interactive Content Access (NICA) digital asset management system by IBM, which is based in White Plains, N.Y. NICA will enable editors to manage the workflow and storage of photos, graphics, pages in the Portable Document Format and text for print and on-line versions of the newspaper.

    Currently, the DISPATCH is using three systems in production and archiving. Two Associated Press (AP) Preservers are used for photos, graphics production and archiving, and a MediaStream SAVE system is used for archiving text. Eventually, the DISPATCH will migrate more than 300,000 photos, 8000 graphics and 16 years of text to the new system.

    This Los Angeles-based digital content management and distribution company has launched its newly redesigned web site, which offers publishers world-wide access over the Web to photos, news, features and graphics from more than 50 providers.

    NewsCom's user interface allows subscribers to quickly search across all information providers and through a broad range of content types, including photos, graphics, illustrations, cartoons, caricatures, paginated pages and interactive content.

    NewsCom distributes content from Reuters, Agence France-Presse, Allsport, Getty Images, ZUMA, Tribune Media Services, Knight Ridder/Tribune, MexSport, New York Times Syndicate, Washington Post Writers Group, New York Times News Service, KRT, EFE and UPI.

    This Boston-based company has introduces DV (digital video) support with the release of VideoFOCUS 1.3, a new version of its flagship desktop product. The VideoFOCUS product enhances video frames by increasing resolution and sharpening the image, making traditional video a viable source of pictures for photo editors.

    Salient Stills' VideoFOCUS 1.3 supports the input of both PAL and NTSC video formats and the output of IPTC headers with images and uses IEEE 1394 ports (also known as Apple Firewire or Sony i-Link) to transfer this data directly into the system.

    Based in Eagan, Minn., WAM!NET and Seattle-based Corbis have opened up a new on-line image delivery and archive service for digital photography, artwork, illustrations and video clips.

    The Corbis/WAM!NET royalty-free system brings together WAM!NET's global managed network, data storage and hosting services with more than 25,000 photo images from the Corbis Royalty-Free Image Collection.

    The new subscription-based service provides global, 24-hour access to Corbis' collection via either an Internet or direct connection to WAM!NET's global managed network and centralized, off-site storage service for digital assets.

    Each annual subscription, billed on a monthly basis, also includes a private on-line WAM!NET storage services library, allowing a customer to store and archive frequently used images and other digital content. Library sizes vary from 5 gigabytes to 15 gigabytes, depending upon the subscription chosen.

    WAM!NET also announced its selection by THE ECONOMIST to provide network connectivity between its London-based publishing center and seven print sites in the United Kingdom, Singapore, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Holland and the United States.
