  • ADSTAR.COM INC.
    eBay, the on-line auction system, has announced the launch of eBay Seller Classifieds, a service that allows eBay sellers to advertise their items in a dedicated section of newspaper classifieds. Powered by Marina del Rey, Calif.-based AdStar, eBay Seller Classifieds are currently offered in the STAR TRIBUNE of Minneapolis and St. Paul metro area, and will soon launch in the ST. PETERSBURG TIMES of Florida.

    AdStar has adapted its Advertise123 product to enable eBay sellers to place ads in eBay Seller Classifieds with a convenient Web interface. The AdStar.com service collects the ads and distributes them to participating newspapers.

    This Bedford, Mass.-based division of Creo Products Inc. of Vancouver, British Columbia, is introducing a new version of its InSite Internet portal for pre-press customers.

    New features provide print buyers with the ability to submit complete print jobs to the printer via the Internet, as well as perform interactive remote proofing and on-line collaboration of rasterized data using the Smart Review and Team Review technologies.

    This Miami, Fla.-based software company has announced that it has begun volume shipments of Canvas 8 for the Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000 operating systems. Canvas is a cross-platform precision illustration application that also integrates photo editing, page layout, presentation and Web graphics capabilities.

    New features include vector and raster sequence recording, full scripting support, manual and automatic Web Image Slicing, Direct Flash (SWF) format export and built-in support for DenebaShare -- a secure, peer-to-peer graphics exchange network. The scripting engine allows users to take complete control of Canvas using Visual Basic, VBScript, Java Script and other Windows Automation compliant systems.

  • EMBLAZE SYSTEMS LTD.
    ESPN Inc., the cable sports network, has announced an agreement with this Israeli company, under which, ESPN will provide video content for demonstrations and trails of EMBLAZE-enabled wireless devices such as cellular phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs).

    EMBLAZE Systems will begin to demonstrate wireless video applications using ESPN content immediately, with initial emphasis on marketing its services to leading carriers in the wireless industry.

  • GEAC PUBLISHING SYSTEMS INC.
    This Tampa, Fla.-based division of Geac Computer Corp. Ltd. of Toronto has announced that Friday-Ad Ltd., a publisher of 43 weekly local advertising titles in the south and west of England, has purchased a 120-seat Cyber$ell advertising system together with Cyber$ell Web and Open Pre-Press Interface (OPI).

    Cyber$ell is Geac's advertising sales and management system, and part of Geac's Command end-to-end publishing tool. The Cyber$ell Ad Management System is a modular too comprising Classified Advertising, Display Ad Booking, Internet Ad Booking, Customer and Contract Management, all integrated into a single SQL database system.

  • LANTANA RESEARCH SOFTWARE CORP.
    This Fremont, Calif.-based company has announced that it has begun shipments of two new products, Stratify Portable Document Format (PDF) and Variform PDF.

    Lantana's Stratify PDF adds another dimension to PDF pages, such as layers, and supports creation, naming, hiding, locking and merging of layers, as well as z-ordering and layer reassignment of objects. Additionally, it can transform multiple pages into layers of a single page.

    Variform PDF extends the usability of Acrobat forms by allowing merging with variable data delimited text files form local data sources, such as spreadsheets, PC databases, custom database queries, etc. In addition, it supports interest, hot folders and, when merging field data, the selection of any system font, including bar code fonts.

  • MACTIVE INC.
    Based in Melbourne, Fla., this provider of advertising systems for the publishing industry has announced that Crain Communications Inc. has signed a contract for and AdBase system. They will start out with a system in Detroit, Mich., and will then be adding systems in other locations.

    Crain Communications purchased Mactive's AdBase system for order entry of classified liners and display ads and classified pagination. They will utilize Windows NT clients and servers with and Oracle database.

  • SEECOLOR
    Cumbrian Newspapers Ltd. of the United Kingdom has installed its first ReelColor color halftone proofing system. The newsprint proofing system was supplied by Monotype Systems Ltd., Surrey, and has been added to the Print Express digital workflow and NewsExpress imagesetters installed by the company last year.

    The newspaper company, which publishes the flagship CUMBERLAND NEWS broadsheet, the daily NEWS AND STAR tabloid, seven weekly titles as well as handling contract printing, is ready to upgrade the software so that it can run a second HP 1050C DesignJet ink jet printer from a single PC running the ReelColor software. With the upgraded software from SeeColor, the company expects to be proofing approximately 400 color broadsheet and tabloid pages per week.

    This Bedford, H.H.-based division of the Italian developer of front-end publishing systems has announced that it has been selected to furnish a 30-seat GN3 newspaper publishing system to the Bee Group Newspapers, a privately held group of nine weekly papers serving suburban Buffalo, N.Y.

    TERA's GN3 Publishing System is a client-server open, scaleable publishing tool designed to take maximum advantage of the Windows NT operating system and SQL database server -- UNIX and Oracle will soon be supported as well.
