  • ADOBE INC.
    This San Jose-based supplier of graphic arts software has announced the immediate availability of the Acrobat eBook Reader 2.1 from Adobe.com, Amazon.com and Barnesandnoble.com. The new Adobe Acrobat eBook Reader features Adobe CoolType font rendering technology, a two-page layout feature and a built-in interactive dictionary.

    Acrobat eBook Reader 2.1 offers new features such as the ability to view the font of any Portable Document Format-based (PDF) Adobe eBook at a variety of resolutions and select the most pleasing to read on an LCD screen. If a user clicks on any word, the interactive dictionary appears with a definition. Additionally, where the publisher grants permission, users can share their eBook selections among Acrobat eBook Readers.

    Beta versions of Acrobat eBook Reader 2.1 for Windows and Macintosh may be downloaded free from the Adobe web site.

    MondoJobs.com, owned by ST. PETERSBURG (Fla.) TIMES (351k) and serving the Tampa Bay area, is the newest site to join this Reston, Va.-based company's network of more than 40 newspaper career centers owned by Knight Ridder of San Jose, Tribune Co. of Chicago, Belo Corp. of Dallas, Gannett Co.   • CREOSCITEX
    This Bedford, Mass.-based provider of imaging and workflow products has introduced Pagelet, a plug-in for Adobe Acrobat, designed to enable the assembly of pages from PDF content. CreoScitex Pagelet assembles PDF "pagelets," or partial pages exported to a PDF file, from a variety of sources.

    Pagelets are being used for partial page content, where they have largely replaced Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) files, which suffer from limitations such as missing fonts, poor preview capabilities and weak output on non-PostScript devices. Pagelet provides standard transformations for full control over the placed PDF, including scale, position, ruler, rotate and snap-to-grid.

    Forbes.com has adopted DeskNetAPS to automate the conversion of hundreds of printed pages to eXtensible Markup Language (XML) files for posting on their web site.

    DeskNetAPS, an automation tool for mass customization and multiple-media publishing, enables Forbes.com to instantly publish pages of content from its magazine group, including FORBES, FORBES GLOBAL, FORBES ASAP and FORBES FYI. DeskNetAPS systematically captures and analyzes content created from a variety of applications, such as Quark XPress, and converts the multiple fonts, styles of headlines, graphics, sidebars, charts and tables into XML on-the-fly without disrupting Forbes.com's existing editorial and production processes.

  • GEAC PUBLISHING SYSTEMS
    This Tampa, Fla.-based division of Canada's Geac Computer Corp. Ltd. has announced that Friday-Ad Ltd, publishers of 43 weekly local advertising titles in England, has purchased a 120-seat Cyber$ell advertising system, including Cyber$ell.Web and OPI.

    Geac's Cyber$ell will provide Friday-Ad's sales staff with tools and functionality missing from their existing advertising system. The system is a modular tool comprising classified advertising, display-ad booking, Internet-ad booking, and customer relations and contract management, in a single SQL database system.

  • GLOBAL GRAPHICS
    This Cambridge, U.K.-based company has aligned its nine pre-press hardware and software subsidiaries worldwide into two divisions to reflect the integration of its businesses, consolidate its position as a supplier to original equipment manufacturers in the graphic arts industry and position the company for further growth.

    The company will now operate as Global Graphics Hardware and Global Graphics Software, with the names of the former subsidiary companies remaining as product brands. Global Graphics Hardware features brands in flexo and litho pre-press plate processing equipments, while digital printing software companies -- including Harlequin Ltd. and Jaws Systems Ltd. -- will form Global Graphics Software.

    The software division has also announced it is shipping Jaws PDF Creator v2.0, the newest version of the company's tool for creating PDF files.

    Essentially a printer driver that creates PDF files on Windows or Macintosh platforms, Jaws PDF Creator produces PDF 1.3 format files. It provides drag-and-drop processing through a desktop icon of PostScript and EPS files that are used in graphic design. Jaws PDF Creator 2.0 is a stand-alone PDF creation tool, which translates and renders files created in a wide range of office and page layout applications to the published PDF specification.

  • SANSUI PVT. LTD.
    This Indian software development company has announced the launch of its SmartNews suite of products designed for newspapers and publishers. The browser-based products piggyback on the Lotus Notes server software, simplifying the process of publishing content in multiple media. The suite includes SmartBureau, SmartFlow, NewsHound, SmartPage, SmartLayout, SmartAdFlo, SmartePublish and SmartArchive.

    Central Independent Newspapers of the United Kingdom has successfully converted its editorial production to this Italian company's GN3 system. SUTTON COLDFIELD OBSERVER, LICHFIELD MERCURY and WALSALL ADVERTISER were fully converted to TERA's GN3 production and almost three-quarters of the TAMWORTH HERALD was also produced on GN3.

    In addition, THE FORESTER, purchased by Northcliffe Newspaper Group, has been completely redesigned and is now produced using TERA's GN3 publishing system. Staff at THE FORESTER converted from manual Olivetti typewriters to GN3 within a week.

    The Sausalito, Calif.-based software supplier, has announced that Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc. has chosen WebWare's MAMBO brand resource management package to manage its media assets across four business segments: publishing, Internet/direct commerce, and television and merchandising. With MAMBO, Omnimedia will centralize its brand assets, facilitating the exchange, distribution and reuse of assets across its core business segments.

    Also adopting MAMBO is PentaMark Worldwide of Detroit, a global communications agency that provides advertising, marketing, media planning and buying support for DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group worldwide. PentaMark will integrate the brand assets from its proprietary database into WebWare's tool.
