  • ADVANCED TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS INC.
    Based in Wilmington, Mass., this developer of advertising, remote ad management, editorial/pagination and circulation publishing systems has announced that Tennessee's KNOXVILLE NEWS-SENTINEL (120k) is upgrading its 114-seat editorial system to MediaDesk.

    Replacing the paper's existing ATS system, the upgrade to MediaDesk provides the NEWS-SENTINEL with a multipurpose database-centered editorial and pagination system, designed for the seamless flow of content from all sources through the production process for print and Internet publishing. An ODBC-compliant SQL relational database controls copy flow, wire-story routing, archiving and a full-text search engine.

    ATS has also announced the signing of an agreement with Gannett Co., Inc. for the development and marketing rights of Circ2000 Circulation Systems, developed by Arizona's Central Newspapers Inc., now owned by Gannett. Circ2000 allows newspapers to identify and capitalize on individual customers through advanced CRM capabilities for the sales and delivery of specialized products and advertising.

  • CCI EUROPE
    The MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS has become the first newspaper in the United Kingdom to purchase a CCI NewsDesk BaseLine system. CCI NewsDesk BaseLine is a standardized editorial system, which utilizes the notion of "best practices" in editorial workflow to streamline the editorial process from story creation to final publication both on-line and in print.

    As part of the agreement, the paper has also installed CCI MediaStore, a complete multimedia archiving system based on the IBM NICA archive system and fully integrates into the CCI NewsDesk Editorial System.

    This Bedford, Mass.-based division of Canada's Creo Products Inc. has introduced Synapse, a new application that links the creative and production processes by enabling a one-button creation of Portable Document Format (PDF) files within the creative desktop environment. Through multiple creation options, users have the option of printing directly from Quark XPress with the Synapse XT, printing to the Synapse desktop printer from any Macintosh application or dragging and dropping Adobe PostScript or PDF files onto a hot folder or Synapse applet.

    CreoScitex's Synapse provides the ability to create and distribute Directives, a set of instructions from the print vendor that eliminate time-consuming process of selecting dozens of application settings. Synapse Pro Suite offers a package of PDF productivity tools for pre-press professionals, including an enhanced version of Synapse, Seps2Comp, Pagelet and Enfocus PitStop Professional.

  • IDEA GROUP PUBLISHING
    This Hershey, Pa.-based book publisher has released "Managing Information Technology in a Global Economy," edited by Mehdi Khosrowpour, currently an associate professor of information systems at Penn State Harrisburg.

    Some topics included in this 1200-page book are distance learning, IT-community partnerships, ethics issues, enterprise resources, computer security, e-commerce, virtual organizations and text databases and document management.

    This Wilmington, Mass.-based typography company has announced that it will offer Custom Font Services to its customers. ITC's new program provides corporate brand identity and custom typeface tools to both large and small organizations.

    ITC's Custom Font Services are enabled through a partnership with Agfa Monotype Corp. to create a font design capability ideally suited to support corporate branding initiatives. ITC's new program helps customers address typical problem areas such as multilingual character sets, cross platform font compatibility, on-screen rendering issues and licensing restrictions.

  • MONOTYPE SYSTEMS INC.
    This Rolling Meadows, Ill.-based provider of output systems has announced that it has entered into a joint agreement for distribution of imagesetters with Agfa Graphic Systems, a division of Ridgefield Park, N.J.-based Agfa Corp.

    Agfa will market Monotype's double-truck Pantara 62 and raster image processors throughout its direct newspaper sales network in conjunction with ist array of consumable film and polyester products.

    Monotype also said that its sales in May "increased significantly," with systems sold to more than 30 customers, ranging from Arizona's CASA GRANDE DISPATCH to Wisconsin's MONROE TIMES.

  • SAXOTECH INC.
    This Rockville, Md.-based division of the Danish supplier of publishing system technology has announced the sale of a 60-seat system to the ROYAL GAZETTE (18k) of Hamilton, Bermuda, which will include the following components:

    The SAXoPress Content Management System; SAXoTECH's Automatic Image Processor software; the SAXoBRS Archiving System; the Publicus Online Publishing System; Base Publicus System; e-commerce Module; Agenda Module, and Guides Module. The Publicus system will be hosted and managed by SAXoTECH at its North American data-center in Reston, Va.

  • VC CONSULTING GROUP INC.
    This Lansdale, Pa.-based provider of technology tools has released the Online Digital Archiving System (ODAS), a new Web-enabled system that gives advertising and media relations professionals the capability of storing and searching for media clips and print advertising in the Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF).

    Selected site documents that can be dynamically downloaded to a CD for offline usage, coupled with VC's indexing and search & retrieval technology, allows the user to create a self-contained, searchable information archive. Key features include multiple on-line search capabilities, on-line CD mastering capabilities, multitiered password protection and report generating abilities.

  • X-RITE INC.
    This Grandville, Mich.-based supplier of color measurement systems has announced that its Ink-Master product is now available in French, German, Spanish and Italian versions. Ink-Master includes component-level database preparation, allowing formulae to specify additives as well as extenders and colorants.

    Also, X-Rite has donated a color measurement instruments and software to Escola SENAI Theobaldo De Nigris of Sao Paulo, Brazil, a school for graphic arts offering degree programs at both secondary and post-secondary levels as well as post-secondary continuing education to the graphic arts community. Among the donations contributed by X-Rite were Ink-Master 530 Spectrodensitometers, Monitor Optimizers, Digital Swatchbooks and ColorShop software.
