  • ADSTAR.COM INC.
    Based in Marina Del Rey, Calif., this channel for the placement of print and on-line classifieds has announced the completion of a round of private financing and has released financial results for the year ended Dec. 31, 2000.

    In 2000, AdStar.com noted an increase in both traffic and transactions for Advertise123.com, and the private-label sites that it manages for large metropolitan newspapers. Total Web-based transactions increased from slightly more than 3000 in 1999 to more than 55,000 in 2000. The related gross billings generated from these transactions, on a combined basis, rose from $563,000 in 1999 to more than $4.3 million in 2000.

  • DEEPBRIDGE CONTENT SOLUTIONS
    This New York-based provider of content management tools announced new QPS-based service and support contracts in early 2001.

    QPS is a software product of DeepBridge business partner, Modulo Systems, which develops enterprise-scale, collaborative workgroup publishing systems for magazine, newspaper and catalog publishers.

    The new increase in business is being driven primarily out of the company's Denver office, which opened its doors in November 2000, and serves as a Modulo-authorized support center for QPS administration and training.

    This Rochester, N.Y.-based company has debuted a system to automatically make graphic jobs visual and available on the Internet.

    The Lynx system creates thumbnails for each page or image with a user-searchable database. The new Durst Dice America system allows users to eliminate the manual process of creating thumbnail and 72-dpi (dots per inch) view files; provides clients and service businesses with quality visuals of all job materials; allows companies to enter and search meta data, and provides on-line database capabilities to manage Web activities.

  • ENFOCUS SOFTWARE
    This wholly owned subsidiary of Artwork Systems of Belgium has acquired ownership of EZ-PDF software technology. Acquired Knowledge Inc., the originators of EZ-PDF, ceased operation on Jan. 31, 2001. Enfocus intends to introduce an updated version of the software, which is aimed at facilitating the easy creation of Portable Document Format (PDF) documents from within native applications such as Quark XPress and Adobe InDesign, to be available mid-2001.

    In addition, Enfocus has announced that its PitStop PDF technology for interactive editing and automated correction of PDF documents has been incorporated into the new Synapse solution from CreoScitex, a division of Creo Products Inc. Synapse is a new application that links the creative and production processes by enabling one-button creation of PDF files within the creative desktop environment.

    Lastly, FUJIFILM Electronic Imaging Ltd.'s Celebrant Extreme Workflow tool, a PDF-enhanced version of the CelbraNT Plus workflow system that automates the production processes of creating and imposing print-optimized PDF for output to proof, film and plate, is now shipping with Enfocus Software PitStop technologies.

  • GANNETT MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES INTERNATIONAL
    This Cincinnati-based newspaper technology marketing division of the multimedia company has announced that it has acquired the assets of AutoChooser from Pentawave Inc. of Scottsdale, Ariz.

    The AutoChooser customer base includes 100 newspapers and more than 700 automobile dealers; the terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. AutoChooser has been available since 1997.

    GMTI said that it would combine AutoChooser with its CarsPlus product line of its Celebro division. The deal includes the rights to the AutoChooser software, the attendant application service provider business, the facilities and the customer support operations. GMTI said the AutoChooser staff would join the company and remain in Scottsdale.

    Pentawave said that it has sold the AutoChooser product line in order to "sharpen its focus" to build its IdealHire product. IdealHire is a recruitment system that has patented matching and ranking technology to enable job seekers and hiring managers to find one another.

    This North Canton, Ohio-based company has signed an agreement with Televisual Data Ltd., a British developer of state-of-the-art content management systems. Under the agreement, Graphic Enterprises Inc. (GEI) will provide and support Televisual's content management systems in North America.

    Features include full support for SQL databases and a web browser-based content workflow management system, ASSET FLOW. The Asset family of tools is designed to meet the workflow requirements of publishing not only in print, but also on the Internet, CD-ROM, DVD-ROM and WAP.

  • NEWSPAPER ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
    The link between technology and cost savings will be one key topic at this year's newspaper technical conference and exposition. NEXPO 2001, sponsored by the Newspaper Association of America of Vienna, Va., will be held June 16-19 in New Orleans.
